Stovell Shows Reserve Steer At Ft Worth

Bob Stovell of Alpine High with a reserve Hereford steer weighing about 855 pounds, bred by Roy Largent, shown at the Southwestern Livestock Show in Fort Worth. He plans to sell the steer Friday and enter another at San Antonio and Houston shows. A large Brewster Jeff Davis 4-H and FFA group will compete in El Paso Feb 7 with steers and sheep, under County Agent Frank Newsom.

Sul Ross Hosts Future Teachers of America Day

Sul Ross State College set January 31 and February 1 as Future Teachers of America Club Day inviting about 60 area high schools. Speakers Miss Myrtle Hembree and Dr. C L Yarbrough will discuss FTA clubs, with a workshop for schools without clubs. An all college semiformal dance Friday night, dormitory accommodations, and meals are arranged for visiting students.

Sul Ross Plans Major Expansion of Geology Dept

Sul Ross State College will spend about 2 million dollars on new buildings and facilities over 12 months to enlarge its geology program. A 70 thousand dollar science building between the Fine Arts Building and Ferguson Hall will house geology and related departments and support a large summer geology school.

Jackie Cross Luckett In Serious Condition

Mrs. Joe Luckett daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Cross of Alpine is in serious condition at Harris Memorial Hospital Fort Worth she was taken there the first of the week Mrs Cross has been with her daughter since the first of the month accompanying her and Mr Luckett to the Mayo Clinic recently Mr Cross went to Fort Worth last week and both he and Mrs Cross are at their daughters bedside.

Mothers to March Here at 7 Tonight

The Mothers to March of Dimes will begin at 7 p.m. tonight with the fire whistle. Local clubs and representatives join under chair man Mrs. Tom Stovell and include Pilot Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Alpine Study Club, El Progreso, Alpine Garden Club and Silver Tea hostesses. Sul Ross State College will be represented by Mrs. Weldon Hanklin. Keith Peters will give a Silver Tea recital at 4 30 p.m. Friday January 31 in the Presbyterian Hospitality Room.

Big Bend Park Mail Service Expanded to Four Days a Week

Mail service between Alpine and Big Bend National Park will run four days weekly starting Feb 8, with departures from Alpine at 8:50 a.m. on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday. The route goes via Terlingua to the Park and returns by Marathon, arriving in Alpine at 4:40 p.m. Ek. T. McDonald is sub-contractor. Baygent is the contractor.

Tub of Dimes Raises 246.71 for March of Dimes

The American Legion Big Bend Post 79 sponsored a Tub of Dimes drive in front of the post office last Saturday raising 246.71 for the March of Dimes. Alpine children riding in the 40 and 8 engine, driven by Jimmy Eichholtz, collected the funds with help from Fritz Bill Weyerts and volunteers including Kenneth Watts John Skinner David Kokernot and others. Special thanks were given to Storey White Side Lumber Co Hugh White John Stovell Jack Johnson the Avalanche and KVLF for support.

Polio Vaccination Gap In Alpine Schools

A total of 68 children in Alpine Schools have not been vaccinated against polio. Among them 29 are high school students, 27 attend Alpine Central, and 14 are from Alpine Centennial.

FTA Assembly Calls Collegewide Future Teacher Program

The Sul Ross State College FTA will hold a special all college assembly Saturday February 1 in the Sul Ross auditorium. Supt Floyd Parsons of Big Spring and Principal Laird Meadow of Monahans High School will speak. An all college dance will close the day in the Student Union Building.

Sul Ross enrollment nears seven hundred mark

Sul Ross State College enrollment rose toward 700 as classes started yesterday. Officials noted continued registration through Saturday and cited the college’s strong growth, with Sul Ross posting the second highest percentage gain among 18 state-supported senior colleges last semester.

Brewster County Poll Tax Sales Lag As Elections Loom

Voters in Brewster County show little interest in politics this year with 970 poll taxes sold at the tax collector's office versus 1481 two years ago. In 1957, 1131 were issued during a lighter election year. Chief Deputy Vic Heil says Friday January 31 is the last sale day and the office will stay open while buyers come in.

Sunny Glen Pipeline Under Construction By City Crew

Eight workers lay a two mile eight inch pipeline in Sunny Glen from the second tank on the water line to the Terry and Daugherty wells. Work began last Wednesday and should finish in about ten days under the supervision of John Mansville’s representative. Alpine High School Gains S A S C Approval

Alpine High School has again been approved as a member of the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges for the 1957 58 school year. Over 200 Texas high schools are scheduled for approval this year based on standards set by the association.
