Parking Meters Removed From Brewster County Courthouse
Parking meters on the east and south sides of the Brewster County Courthouse square were removed by order of the City Commission. Members noted the meters yielded little revenue about 400 dollars per year and had funded higher salaries, while officials said the goal was to secure convenient parking in the business district, not raise funds.

County Commissioner Hendryx says Brewster County will haul caliche to build a 40 foot wide base for about 15 blocks of paving in Alpine this year. City officials will designate streets and supervise actual paving, with property owners arranging paving through City Engineer Stowell.

Death takes Mike Schodt in Marathon funeral services
Funeral services for Miguel Arrabasto Shodts, 60, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Catholic Church in Marathon. He died Sunday afternoon at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Born in San Antonio on August 1, 1897, he had run a Marathon grocery business for years. Survived by his widow. burial in Marathon cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge.

Teplicek Well to be Tested in Sunny Glen Area
The City will test the Teplicek well in Sunny Glen for 120 days starting July 1. City officials say M. W. Collie of Midland will be paid 5c per thousand gallons pumped during the test. Collie owns Teplicek water rights on the Nell Gardner land and a City pump will replace the current pump.

Alpine Volunteers Fight 18 Fires in 1957
The Alpine Volunteer Fire Department battled 18 fires during 1957, causing $57,350 in property damage. Fire Chief J. C. Cooley reported seven fires at night and five outside the city limits. One call rescued a boy from an abandoned well, totaling 271 man hours.

Avora Owens county treasurer of Brewster County since 1944 announced her candidacy for re election subject to the Democratic primary in July.
