MP notes a Texas Highway Dept plan to replace black center stripes with yellow to improve visibility and reduce head on collisions. The move follows President Truman's Safety conference urging safer roads, with 65000 gallons of yellow paint to be used. Washington budgets call for 117 400 for Big Bend National Park improvements as part of a 225 138 Texas park allocation. Funds cover maintenance 67 738 roads and trails 40 000 and new utilities water sewer and housing projects including a water system 50 000 sewer 13 000 utility building 13 500 and three employee residences.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church for Mrs Iva Mae Bodry born July 1 1886 in Van Buren Arkansas who died January 11 at the home of her daughter Mrs A L Gade Fort Knox Kentucky She had lived in Alpine since 1915 and was survived by four daughters a son three brothers three sisters seven grandchildren and one great grandchild The service was conducted by Rev Austin H Dillon with interment in Elm Grove cemetery Pallbearers were Dennis Brown Stanley Fulcher Gene Cowell M T McClure Eric Williams Tom Johnson
Espy Miller was re-elected president of the Highland Hereford Breeders Assn at its 29th annual meeting in Marfa. Officers include David Combs as vice president and Jean Shannon as secretary-treasurer. John Catto fills the vacancy on the board after Oscar Roberts’s death. The group opposed meat rationing and price controls and favored vaccination to prevent foot and mouth disease.

Miss Tomiko Kanasawa the American born soprano and renowned Madame Butterfly will join Hungarian tenor Gabor Carelli for a joint program at Sul Ross auditorium next Thursday. The duo will perform scenes from Madame Butterfly and La Traviata with authentic costumes. Tickets for the Big Bend Municipal Concert series remain on sale at the door with adult and child pricing and transferrable memberships.
A rummage and bake sale to benefit the high school senior trip will be held on the post office lot Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds go to the Denver trip fund. Mrs. Edgar Martin, chairwoman of the senior room mothers, announced the event.
A Monday night snow delivered .37 inches of moisture to Hiland area ranges badly needing it. Four inches fell here, lighter elsewhere, most melted next day under sun. The moisture aids ranges without moisture since Dec 12, when .40 inches fell. Temperatures were among the season's lowest.
An ordinance prescribing specifications for concrete sidewalks curbs and gutter construction and requiring a permit for such work passed by the city commission on January 12 appears in this issue. The measure aims to provide uniformity in the construction and location of sidewalks and related facilities.
Del Rio race meet caused a schedule shift for the Sul Ross Booster club rodeo from May 6 7 8 to May 14 15 16. Producers Raymond Quigg and Chili Cole lead a three day show with bucking horses steers and specialty acts. Proceeds fund Sul Ross athletic programs and booster club efforts.
Dr. B F Berkeley chairman of Brewster county Infantile Paralysis chapter appeals for support as national supply of cards and folders ran out on January 7 forcing local reliance on volunteers. Subscriptions can be mailed to treasurer John Canton or left at First National Bank. campaign ends January 31.
El Progreso Public library, run by volunteers, will relocate from the courthouse area to a new space on N. 7th St around February 1 after upgrades. Memberships are sold for 1 per year, with access to books for one week, and funds cover supplies, signs, and book purchases.
Brewster county tax collector announced the initial 1948 motor vehicle plate allotment. Passenger plates range AS2100 to AS3299, truck MC5700 to MC6199, and farm RC4500 to RC4799. Additional plates cover truck tractors farm truck tractors trailers house trailers dealers and motorcycles. Plates go on sale February 1 for vehicles registered in Texas in 1947.
Boy Scout Troop 41 Alpine sponsored by the Methodist church held a Board of Review. Four scouts advanced: Jack Brown John Devenport and John Bradford to First Class and Cc W Cox to Second Class. Court of Honor planned for Scout Sunday February 8. Troop 41 also earned the Council President's Award for membership increase last year. R H Brooks district commissioner attended a first aid course to form new first aid teams.
The Alpine chamber of commerce reviewed 1947 accomplishments at its annual meeting. Highlights include surveys of lake sites, sewer and street work, livestock shows, relations with Border Patrol, locating services in Alpine, supporting the S P depot opening, golf and Big Bend trail activities, travel literature outreach, and cooperation with local schools Sul Ross College and the antelope hunt. Since July 15, the manager wrote 1124 letters, answered 782 calls, and provided information to 1406 visitors. The 1947 receipts were 10 410 95 with 9 442 48 disbursed leaving 968 48. cash plus 743 71 from 1946 brought 1 712 18 in the bank as of Jan 1 1948.
Don C. Littleton was chosen president of the Alpine chamber of commerce at the annual meeting held last Thursday night at the Holland hotel attended by about 175 people. Other officers were Jack Cross vice president F L McCollum treasurer James W Francois and William Winter James Pate as directors. Two additional directors from Sul Ross College, Dr J B Speer and Jerry Starnes, were added to fill vacancies.

Mrs. Ethel Newman, once prisoner of the Japs in Manila, visited her sister Mrs. R. A. Bow and family this week. She has worked for 15 years with the U.S. Life Insurance Co. in New York and, after release in 1945, spent time in the States before being sent to Honolulu. She will oversee the company's Manila office.
