Alpine High School enforces a no pants rule for girls as part of the 1969 70 Student Handbook, sparking protests after cold weather. Superintendent Clarence Winn acknowledged the antiquated policy and plans changes before the 1970 71 school year, with students wearing mini skirts or pant dresses during the latest cold week.
Alpine fights Fabens Wildcats in a key district clash with the Bucks facing an experienced unit led by Tony Enciso who averages 21 points per game Jim Pattillo at 10 Juan Llanez and Steve Gonzalez at eight to nine points Gonzales. Alpine stands 6 5 with a 16 point scoring average heading into a high scoring tilt. Area fans urged to back Alpine for the district title.
The St James Episcopal Guild voted Tuesday to donate 50 dollars to the Alpine Community Center day nursery. Mrs Norman L McNeil presented the check to Sam Buck, the director, as officers were elected including Mrs Ernest Speck president and Mrs James V Glasscock vice president.
The 26th Annual Big Bend Livestock Show takes place Friday and Saturday January 16 and 17 at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair Warehouse. Lambs must be weighed and penned by 10 a.m. Friday, with steers and heifers in by 6 p.m. Judges include Dr. Jack Ruttle and Dr. Everett Turner.
Alpine ISD will switch to a 10 month term starting next September, boosting average teacher salaries by 600 dollars as days extend from 180 to 190 for teachers and from 175 to 180 for students. Board actions include bond payments, building funds, and a new kindergarten program for underprivileged five year olds. Hoover Bros. donates supplies to Alpine, Monahans, and Big Spring districts.
Mrs. Katie Roberts formerly Katie Kimball died Sunday January 11 at Valleys Nursing Home after a long illness in Marathon. Funeral services set for Friday January 16 at 3 30 p m at First Baptist Church Marathon with Rev Simmons officiating. Burial in Marathon Cemetery under Geeslin Funeral Home. Survivors include daughter Mrs Mary Pugh of Springerville. sons Travis Roberts of Marathon and O W Roberts of Alpine. sisters Mrs Nellie Davis and Mrs Addie Lee. brother John Kimball. nine grandchildren 17 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. She was born January 15 1883 in Bandera and came to Marathon from Ozona in 1894. She married Jim Roberts February 15 1903 in Alpine. he died in 1960.
The Avalanche lists five Democrats seeking county posts in Brewster County. Felix P. McGaughy seeks re election as county judge. Hallie Stillwell runs for re election as justice of the peace in Precinct I Alpine. Avora Owens seeks re election as county treasurer. Sara Pugh seeks re election as county and district clerk. Joe Baxter, a former West Texas Utilities employee, runs for constable of Precinct J Alpine, currently held by Levi Bell.
A holiday season election at the Junior High chose duchesses for the high school coronation. From the 8th grade Yvonne Valenzuela, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Valenzuela, was elected. The 7th grade selected Janice Uranga, daughter of Mrs. Faviola Uranga, and Lou Whittington, daughter of Mrs. Mary Whittington, was elected from the 7th grade.
Brewster County tax office reports 1338 total registered voters to date. Deadline to register is Friday afternoon January 30 due to Saturday closure of the office.
