Cattle Report Notes Lower Numbers and High Prices

Snow in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains left moisture for spring grass, with cattle numbers at about 40 percent of normal but quality high and prices strong. Sheep also declined. Alpine sees a winter event with Harlem Globetrotters coming Jan. 17 and a Chamber of Commerce banquet Jan. 20 featuring Herb Petry, state highway official.

Big Bend Livestock Show Set in Alpine January 18

The 14th annual Big Bend Livestock Show will be held in Alpine at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse on Saturday January 18. Twenty two baby beeves compete against fifteen last year while fifty fat lambs and twenty breeding sheep are entered. Judging begins at 8:30 am for lambs, 11 am for capon, 1:30 pm for steers and 2:30 pm for the livestock auction. Judges include Woodrow Mills, Miles Pierce and Ralph Meriwether with Don Estes as auctioneer. The show committee features H L Kokernot Jr and others. premiums include 50 for grand champion steer and 25 for reserve.

Cosgrove Named Minister at Alpine Church of Christ

Mr and Mrs Owen Cosgrove moved to Alpine to begin work with the Alpine Church of Christ. The Bronte natives hold a BA from Abilene Christian College class of 1954 with high honors and are finishing an MS thesis. They live at 695 W Ave A with their son Hank and are Lions Club members.

Promenaders To Hold Area Dance Saturday

The Pioneer Promenader Square Dance Club sponsors an area square dance at 8 p.m. Saturday Jan. 11 in Sul Ross College Gym. Guest caller Joe Wilson of Abilene leads the lineup with W H Perryman hosting from Sul Ross. A floor show is planned and spectators are welcome. Admission is 1 per couple for dancers and 50c for spectators.

Bob Stovell Enters Houston Fat Stock Show

Alpine FFA member Bob Stovell has entered two Hereford steers and one nurse cow in the junior division of the Houston Fat Stock Show running February 19 to March 2. The event offers about $216,500 in cash premiums and awards to exhibitors as air conditioned barns prepare for about 10,000 head of livestock and related entries.

Post Office Receipts Rise at Alpine in 1957

Alpine Post Office reports stronger fiscal year results with 1957 gross receipts totaling 46229.49 dollars, up from 4578.20 dollars in 1956, and December 1957 receipts at 6538 dollars, a 6.38 percent increase over December 1956. Postmaster Billy West notes the year showed a healthy gain.

Pilot Club Furnishes Room at Brewster Memorial Hospital

Mrs Avora Owens Brewster County treasurer announced Alpine Pilot Club will completely furnish a room in the new Brewster County Memorial Hospital with 510 dollars. The purchase includes a chest of drawers youth bed inhalator two cribs a lounge chair and drapes. Cribs drapes and inhalator are in place. remaining furniture will arrive soon with a plaque noting the Pilot Club’s gift.

Minor collision at J. C. Penney corner injures no one

A west bound car from Caracas skidded into Peyton Cain while he turned left on Fort Davis Highway. No injuries occurred though Cain's sedan suffered substantial damage.

Creigh Leads Brewster County Education Committee

Organizational chairman Al Creigh of Alpine heads the Brewster County Hale Aiken Educational Committee. About 24 Brewster County citizens will serve on the complete committee with 12 from Alpine and 12 from Marathon.

Austin receives promotion to division equipment supervisor in Lubbock

Claude T. Austin, former vice chief at Southwestern Bell when the toll center was built, has been promoted and reassigned to Lubbock as division equipment supervisor serving western Texas. Mrs. Austin will join him there. their daughter Claudia stays in Alpine until term ends. the Austins sold their Fort Davis highway home to Mr. and Mrs. Schonberg of Bayside New York.

Snowest Pupils Absent Across Alpine Schools

Alpine schools reported 320 pupils absent on Monday due to heavy snow. Absentees included 73 at the high school, 89 at Central, and 258 at Alpine Centennial, with make up days planned for Easter holidays or Saturday sessions. Other high absence days were Nov 22 with 205 and Jan 2 with 215.

Alpine defense officials urge every family to prepare at least a ten day supply of stored foods. With local stores holding only a short supply and potential refugee influx, households should stock canned milk juices fruits vegetables meats cereals and substitutes and rotate their stock. A government pamphlet with items and quantities is available at the city office.
