Chaney Rites Set Today for Texas Rancher Morgan Chaney

Morgan Chaney 78 prominent Marathon area rancher died Tuesday night at Brewster Memorial Hospital. Funeral at 10 a.m. today at St James Episcopal Alpine with Rev Evan Davies officiating. Burial in Marathon Cemetery under Kelly Funeral Home. Survivors include wife Elinor Abrams Chaney daughter Mrs Bart Evans and grandson Robert Evans of Marathon. The Oregon born World War I veteran and Mason moved to Texas in 1909 and owned a large ranch on San Francisco Creek near Marathon.

Big Freeze Grips Alpine and Big Bend Area

Extremely cold conditions hit Alpine and Davis Mountains county as temperatures dipped to 9 and 7 degrees in recent mornings. Weather observer Homer Hudgins reports 1969 figures with a record low of ten on March 15 and a high of 100 on August 18, along with a 16 day stretch below freezing in March. Total rainfall for 1969 was 12.38 inches, below long term averages.

Alpine Chamber of Commerce elects four new directors

Four new directors were elected to the Alpine Chamber of Commerce board for three-year terms. E. E. Hillger, Edith Hopson, John Pattillo, and Kenneth Stucke join continuing directors including John Stradley and Shelby Kerbow. Ex-officio members are Mayor Hudgins and County Judge Merenghy. Retiring directors include That Cauins, Forrest Walker, and Hugh S. White.

Dormitories Open Doors on Sunday at Sul Ross

Sul Ross State University announces dormitories open at 11 p.m. Sunday. Registration for the spring semester runs Monday to Wednesday January 12 to 14 in the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library with staggered reporting by last name. New students should check in with the registrar and adviser before registration. Food services start at 7 a.m. Monday in campus cafeterias.

Airport Board Commended Over Treasury Report

City Council members commended the Airport Board for a financial report by Treasurer Neville Haynes. Bank balances were $1,239.67 on Jan 1, 1969 and $1,362.20 on Jan 6, 1970 with a yearly gain of $86.03. Receipts totaled $32,735 from hangar rent, tractor sale, city allocation, and other items. disbursements reached $2,648.47 covering utilities labor maintenance runway lighting and equipment purchases.

Pate Named Police Chief

State Patrolman Jean Pate will become Alpine chief of police on February 1 1970 succeeding Herman Hamilton who resigns effective January 22 1970 to join Reeves County Sheriffs Dept in Pecos. Hamilton thanks the council for a pleasant working relationship and service to Alpine while Pate has been stationed in Alpine for years.

Zoning Change Okayed for Block 1 North Addition

City Council approved reclassifying Block 1 North Addition from R-1 to C-1 after a long hearing. The site lies northeast of Central School near 5th and 4th streets, with plans for an office building and possible Big Bend Telephone Co. offices relocation. Concerns about commercial encroachment were raised by residents. vote was 3-1.
