Park Supt. Stanley C. Joseph reports 90 565 visitors to Big Bend in 1961 up from 75 879 the prior year. Campground use rose 27 3 percent and concession use 12 percent, with campfire talks drawing 18 601 attendees. Weather, scenery, and year round services remain appealing to visitors.

Alpine Chamber of Commerce reports high demand for the annual membership banquet set for Monday January 22 at the Holland House with Dr James H Jauncey as principal speaker Over 100 of 200 tickets sold in a week and reservations close January 15 on a first come first served basis Thad Corkins retires as president and new directors and the 1962 president will be introduced before Jauncey's address at 730 p.m.
Brewster Jeff Davis 4 H Club members earned top and high placing at the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix. Janet Grubb claimed reserve champion Hereford steer in junior division. senior calf results saw Janet Grubb second with Joe Kimball sixth Barbara Grubb eighth and Jimmy Justice tenth. Barbara Grubb won junior calf first while Janet Grubb placed fourth. Janet Grubb's Angus steer topped its class. Keesey Kimball showed two groups of medium weight feeder calves placing second and fourth. Nine club steers were exhibited with sale prices averaging 40 a pound. Odie Grubb of Fort Davis and County Agent B G Hill attended.

The Sophomore League directors unanimously voted to suspend operations as of February 1 amid dwindling clubs and major league changes. Alpine Cowboys had been in the loop three years, with Albuquerque and El Paso withdrawing to Texas League. Only three teams remained after a major league working agreement was canceled. Local officials and fans faced the loss of professional baseball for 1962.
Bud Powers, operator of Powers Service Station in Alpine, announced this week his candidacy for constable of Precinct 1. A 40 year old former military policeman, he served at Marfa Air Base and led Alpine town patrol. He sits on the Alpine School Board and helped organize the Brewster County Rescue Squad. He is a volunteer fireman and a church member. He and his wife Venita have three children, Linda 15, Mike 12, and Janie 10.
Alpine School Board accepted the resignation of Mrs Faye J Davis of Central School on Monday night. Mrs Anna G Woodruff was named to replace Mrs Davis and Mrs Edith E Brown was assigned to teach one English class at Central.
Alpine will host the 9th Annual Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament January 19 and 20 in the High School Gym. Eight teams invited Fort Davis Marfa Presidio Bracksville Van Ham Sanderson Mc Camey and Alpine. Presidio defends title amid stiff competition. Alpine 9 1 after a Van Horn win averaging 51 5 points per game while holding opponents to 30.
Phyllis Boston and Carlene Hegelund will present a two piano recital by the Sul Ross State College music department at 3 p.m. Sunday January 14 in the college auditorium. The program includes works by Schumann Mozart and Townsend.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager Peter Koch announces intent to run for Brewster County District 1 commissioner. He cites 17 years of service to Brewster, support from local allies, and conservative policies to spur growth while balancing public interests. Koch and his family relocated to the Big Bend in 1945 from Cincinnati, where he was a chief photographer and educator. He serves as Big Bend National Park Development Committee director and Big Bend Natural History Association director. He remains Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager.
L A Lanny Cullison of Fort Stockton has filed as candidate for the new 72nd Texas Legislative District facing Democratic primaries. Alpine’s Gene Hendryx also entered the race. Cullison, a Fort Stockton lawyer for four years, has 22 years as attorney in Oklahoma and Texas and a banking and ranching background. He and his wife own a home at 1806 W Callaghan. A World War II veteran, he served with the 36th Division. He is a member of the American Legion, Fort Stockton Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce and First Methodist Church.
The Alpine Scoot R. will host a donkey basketball game for the FFA boys at 7:30. Admission is one dollar for adults and fifty cents for students and children. Don Stevens, the high school principal, will captain the faculty team. Everyone is invited to attend the fun.
Alpine woke to record cold as low temperatures plunged to a new low on Wednesday morning. Light snow began Tuesday when a severe cold front moved in, with warmer air forecast for later today.
The longest running British play by Agatha Christie arrives as Big Bend Players mid winter offer. Opening January 19 at Alpine Community Center the murder mystery features Hallie Matlock Monte Jones Roy Meyers Alice Reed Olson Dr Alfred Rochester Carol Vogt Vernon Harlan and Roy Lassiter Jr.
Fifteen club steers 150 fat lambs and 10 breeding sheep will be exhibited at the 15th annual Big Bend 4 H and FFA Livestock Show in Alpine this weekend. The event opens 4 p.m. Friday at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse with fat lambs and steers judging. Broiler judging starts 10 a.m. Saturday followed by lamb judging at 10 30. Calf judging begins at 4 p.m. A barbecue is served 5 30 to 6 45 p.m. Saturday and the public is invited. For the first time the championship judging and auction will be at night to accommodate workers. The sale begins 7 30 p.m. Saturday. Odus Wittenburg of Del Rio will auction. Judges include Jimmy Taylor for steers and Fred Wilkinson for lambs. Sifters and weighers are Woodrow Mills Billie Weston Tommy Love Rust Sargent and Keesey Kimball. Ellis Owens of Marathon chairs the barbecue. Alpine Lions Club runs a concession stand. Dr. Everett Turner’s Sul Ross State College students assist at the show.
Warner Construction Co of San Angelo won the dormitory project at Sul Ross State College with the low bid of 375 374 funded by a Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency loan. The 56 100m girls dorm will sit east of Ferguson Hall on Highway 90, feature Georgian colonial brick and cut stone, two person rooms with en suite baths, lounges on each floor, and is due for completion by September 1 1962 for fall 1962 occupancy.
Keith Peters won the Mr FTA contest in El Paso last weekend delivering an impressive speech. He received engraved cuff links and will attend the state contest in Austin in February. Donna Mueller was elected vice president of District VI, the second largest district in the state. Eight Alpine High School students attended the Future Teachers convention with Mrs Lois Peters and Principal Donald Stevens.
