Avora Owens Seeks Re‑election as County Treasurer

Kay Edwards, a MSU junior majoring in radio and television and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, competes with 18 other contestants for Miss MSU 1962 63. Contestants must be sophomores or upperclassmen with a 2 3 GPA and no prior marriages. Preliminary interviews began Jan 3 with final judging on the pageant night featuring bathing suit evening gown and talent rounds. The winner receives a 100 scholarship and may advance to Miss Montana and Miss America pageants.

County officials expect Commissioner Gene Hendry to resign and allow an interim appointee to fill Precinct 1 until the November general election. Judge Felix McGaughy, recovering from a heart attack in San Antonio, is due back in Alpine Sunday. Chairmen anticipate filing for May primaries while the Nov 6 election will choose a new commissioner if needed. Postmaster Billy West reports Alpine postal receipts rose overall in 1961 with gains in several months. A December decline of 948 reduced the yearly total by about 1 percent from 1960. 1960 receipts were 59326.94, compared to 58722.40 in 1901, a 604.54 difference.

Burial services for Dr. Donald G. Melvor of the U Up and Down Ranch Fort Davis were held in Concord H. He died Saturday night at Brewster County Memorial Hospital Alpine after months of ill health. He was born August 7 1890 in Vermont. He is survived by his widow Violet Locke Melvor two daughters Nancy Wells of Cambridge Massachusetts Janet McIvor New York City and a son Don manager of the U Up and Down Ranch. Livingston Funeral Home of Alpine handled local arrangements.
