Lee Smith Named To County Post
Lee Smith was appointed yesterday as county commissioner of Precinct 1 by County Judge Felix McGaughy to serve until a new official is chosen in the November 6 general election. Smith will not seek the position and previously held four-year terms as commissioner between 1949 and 1957. Five candidates have filed for the Precinct 1 post with Democratic Chairman Ray LaBeff: J. C. Cooley, Thad Corkins, J. T. (Iggs) Davis, Doug Dorris, and Mrs. Virginia Bailey. Smith replaces Gene Hendryx, who resigned to run for state representative.

Cooley Seeks County Post in Precinct 1 Bid
Cooley, vice president of Storey-White Lumber Co., announced this week his candidacy for county commissioner of Precinct 1 on the Democratic ticket. Alpine community leader with 31 years at the lumber firm and 25 years as Alpine Volunteer Fire Department chief, he also held roles with Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and First Methodist Church. He and his wife have two sons, George and Sam, and he invites residents to the Big Bend 4-H and FFA Livestock Show this weekend.

Deadline On Poll Taxes Is Jan 31 in Brewster County
Brewster County faces limited voice in the 1962 elections as poll tax sales lag. Tax Collector Vic Heil reports only 75 dollars in poll taxes sold by yesterday and says the office stays open until 5 30 pm January 31 with no taxes after that time. The 19th annual Big Bend 4 H and FFA Livestock Show moves from last Saturday to this weekend in the Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse. About 504 4 H and FFA youths from Brewster and Jeff Davis counties will exhibit 15 head of steers 150 fat lambs and 20 breeding sheep. Judges include Jimmy Taylor for steers and Dub Day for lambs. Auctioneer is John Williamson. Prizes include 360 silver dollars and trophies from local shops.

Bell, 73, announced his candidacy for Precinct No. 1 constable in the Democratic primary. Dee Anne wins Alpine High School’s 1962 Betty Crocker Search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow by scoring highest on the homemaking knowledge test taken by senior girls. She becomes a state winner and may compete for national honors with scholarships ranging from 2 000 to 5 000 dollars and a study tour to New York City Washington DC and Colonial Williamsburg Virginia.
