Subscriptions Grow For Avalanche With 65 New Readers
Sixty five new readers joined The Avalanche list since September 1 1940, the largest gain in period outside special campaigns. The names include residents from Alpine El Paso Roswell Kerrville Stuttgart Presidio and more with several new renewals. The January Big Bend Medical Society meeting at the Holland hotel in Alpine will gather members with Dr Joel Wright as secretary and a program on pulmonary tuberculosis and related topics.

Corkran Named New Penney Manager Here
C M Corkran named manager of the J C Penney Co store here succeeding J S Arledge whose resignation took effect early this week. Corkran comes from El Paso where he has worked for two years in the Penney store. Mrs Corkran and their son Charles Wesley 7 accompanied him and stay at the Holland hotel. Arledge who opened the local Penney store in 1934 will join Abilene city business and plan to move this week.

Fort Worth Jan 6 Expansion of the Texas Big Bend Park association continues with the naming of two more congressional district chairmen. Calvin Huffman of Eagle Pass will head the Fifteenth district and C W Meadows of San Angelo will lead the Twenty first district as the project eyes national park status and cross border expansion into Mexico.

City to drill test water well near town edge
City commissioners and chamber of commerce appointees agreed to drill a test well at the southeast edge of town through mid February unless a strong water flow is found earlier. CC committee includes J W Frazer Dr J E Wright and W D Boreham. Drilling reached about 1440 feet in hard rock with ten inch casing at 1300 feet. if needed shallow wells will be added to meet summer demand.

Alpine Junior High Plans Eighth Basketball Tournament
Plans for Alpine Junior High school's eighth annual junior basketball tournament are underway with about 25 teams invited. The event will feature two height-based groups and a 15 year age limit as of Sept 1, 1940. This year center jumps after each score will be used to suit young players and keep tests brief with six minute quarters.

Alpine Post Reports 7 Percent Revenue Rise in 1940
Postmaster Annie K Turney announced Alpine receipts for 1940 totaled 21450.03, up from 20002.47 in 1939, a net gain of over seven percent. Quarterly gains occurred each calendar quarter with December leading at 5033.95, up about 400 from 1939.

Game Warden Tom Redford filed 18 violation cases in Jeff Davis County with fines paid in over half. Other cases occurred in Presidio and Pi counties. Arrests rose due to tighter coverage with a deputy in Presidio. offenses included trespass, killing a fawn, firing without a license, and other statutes. The top county fine was 100 dollars plus costs for killing a fawn. Fourteen additional cases in the county included youths charged with trespass. those were dismissed with admonitions.
