Casner Motor Co achieved a record 325 car sales in 1940, including 104 new vehicles and 221 used units. Alpine reports mild cases, while a slow rain and first snowfall of the season swept the area, with up to a quarter inch of moisture by noon and temperatures above freezing.
Amon Carter announces Texas Big Bend park association will organize congressional district committees as phase two of expansion. District committees will include county representatives and association directors in each political subdivision. Community chairmen will form city and town committees representing business, professional, social, religious, civic and fraternal groups. Enrollment for movement supporters begins after committees are set.
FORT DAVIS Jan 1 Lee Kingston 85 longtime resident of Jeff Davis County died Sunday at his home in Balmorhea after a long illness. He was the son of Mr and Mrs WL Kingston and is survived by eight siblings. Kingston spent most of his early life on his parents ranch near the Davis Range and was known as a large, jovial, talkative man who followed national affairs with interest.
Minister Frank Trayler of Pecos, former Alpine Church of Christ pastor, has been called to lead Austin Street Church of Christ in Levelland with services starting January 1, according to local reports. The notice also notes a separate remark about Belgium glass imports.
Fort Davis Texas reports 18 miles of new road completed last year from grading to blacktopping between Fort Davis and Old Spanish Trail at Toyahvale. About 11 miles remain to form an unbroken pavement, with five miles currently being blacktopped. A six mile section will straighten and widen the route to close the gap from Limpia Canyon to the north edge of Fort Davis. Completion is expected by June. Plans include early start on paving to the observatory, with eight miles of Davis Mountain State Park highway from Nunn Hill advancing.
Registration of aliens at Alpine up to the deadline of December 26 totaled 311, with Terlingua not yet reported. Countywide estimates by the U S Immigration Service suggested about 1200 Jews reside in the county, many away in cotton harvest work. Official county totals were expected soon.
PR Knight suffered a broken shoulder bone last Friday morning when his car overturned on the Alpine Fort Stockton highway about two miles south of the Santa Fe railroad crossing. The car was badly wrecked when a rear tire went down. Mrs Knight, who was with her husband, was uninjured.
Hon C R Sutton of Maria was sworn in as associate justice of the Court of Civil Appeals for the Eighth Texas district in Alpine. The ceremony occurred in the County Clerk office with Clerk Frazer and others attending. Sutton, longtime district judge, gained a strong reputation with many notable cases including Yates field in Pecos county. He arrived in Alpine Sunday hoping to see Mr Fraser administer the oath but proceeded Monday with Mr Prazer officiating. The gathering included A B Owens, Sutton’s brother Ine, and his son C R Sutton. Marath on and Marathon notices follow with funeral for Mrs Mary Sullivan and death reports for George Shorty Miller and Mrs Nora Dawson of Cantilo.
An announcement from Fort Davis states no horses or mules will be purchased for U S Army purposes until about April 1. The information comes via a letter received by Richard K Merrill from Marion T Voorhes lieutenant commanding the South Central Remount Area.
Dr. Finis K. Turney of San Angelo died in a San Angelo hospital on December 20 from injuries suffered in an auto accident at Fort Stockton on December 8. He had lived in Alpine for years, practicing with his cousin the late Dr. M L Turney, before moving to San Angelo 10 or 12 years ago.
The Revenue Act of 1940 changes filing liability for individuals. Citizens or residents must file for calendar year 1940 based on status and gross income, not net income. Thresholds: single or separated $800. married living apart $800. married filing jointly $2000. A return is required even if deductions reduce net income below these amounts.
Sheriff Skevington announces nearly all of Brewster County's official family for 1941 42 have qualified and assumed duties. Sheriff’s deputies include T F Skevington and BR Cox with Otis French in the Alpine area. New officers also include Raymond Garnett as justice of the peace Prec 1 Vina Brown for Prec 2 C E Patterson as county attorney and four re elected commissioners William Cotter Joe Moss Earl Clark and Chas Burnam. Several offices await final appoinments this week including Marathon deputy sheriff.
Drilling continues on the city water well at the east edge of town after a plan change. Tony Hess, the driller, remains on site despite prior plans to pause for CCC camp work in the Chisos mountains, with a meeting set for January 6 between chamber of commerce members and city officials to discuss future development if water is not found. The borefront has moved from volcanic ash into hard rock likely Edwards limestone, with samples sent to the state laboratory. Gravel sand and shale have also been encountered during drilling.
Well known Brewster County rancher and merchant L. Hannold, age 70, died at Alpine hospital following months of illness. Based near Tornillo Creek by Hot Springs, he operated a store and ran cattle. Survived by two sons Bill and Art and daughter Lucille, funeral set for 10 am today.
