Alpine chamber of commerce and city and county officials join with the Brewster County Commissioners Court to back a Texas board effort to build a school for the mentally retarded. A 200 acre site is being evaluated, with deadlines set for January 13. Representatives seek state committee approval and utility support.

Noted Singer Kenneth Smith to Perform at Tri-County Concert
Bass-baritone Kenneth Smith will perform at 8 p m Monday Jan 13 in Sal Rows College Auditorium under the Tri-County Community Concert Association. A native of England he came to the United States at age four and studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the New York College of Music. He served with the Air Force in World War II flying 40 missions in the South Pacific as a B 24 navigator and will sing roles including Hans Sachs and Pimen among others.

Major Stone Laid to Rest in Moses Lake
Funeral services for James S. Stone 41 retired Air Force major were held in Moses Lake Washington. He died Friday Jan 3. Stone husband of Katherine Williams of Alpine and son of Mr and Mrs Erle Williams. He served in Newfoundland Tripoli Japan and at several bases before retirement last fall. Survived by four sons his Texas father and two sisters.

Sayles to Address Annual CC Meeting
Funeral services for John Jefferson Oliver 81 were held in Alpine with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Oliver died January 1 at his Edinburg home and had a decades long ranching career including time in Marfa Alpine and Santa Rosalia with ties to the Neville Ranch. He is survived by his widow Mary Neville, a stepson Neville Haynes, two grandsons Joe and Jeff Haynes, and four brothers.

Alpine Chamber Banquet Heads Topic Economy Talk
Principal speaker for the Alpine Chamber of Commerce banquet Monday night January 20 will be Bill Sayles of Abilene and the West Texas Utilities Co. The talk on community development follows growth in Alpine to new heights and aims to show factors guiding future expansion. New officers will be installed at the event with Homer Hudgins as president and Supt. Jack Frost coordinating the Central School Cafeteria venue for over 200 attendees including guests from Big Bend National Park and nearby communities.

Brewster and Jeff Davis County 4 H clubs returned from the Sand Hills Hereford Show in Odessa and the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix. 4 H members entered Herefords and Angus with several placings and sales reported. the annual Big Bend Livestock Show is set for Jan 17 18 in Alpine with about 25 steel entries and 150 lamb entries.

Sul Ross State College received a $10,000 cash gift from Henry B. DuPont, vice president of DuPont Corp.
