Barbara Grubb a young 4-H Club feeder from Fort Davis showed the grand champion steer at the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix yesterday.
Spectators Bill and Eulalia Cotter enjoyed the Rose Bowl in Pasadena where Tom Tipps, Washington Huskies line coach and former Sul Ross Lobo player, drew family ties. The note highlights Tipps career moves, siblings, and local connections.
Alpine records show 1960 precipitation at 15.62 inches, over 1959’s 13.52 but below 1958’s 22.71. July led with 4.71 inches while February had 0.27 inches. December rainfall reached 2.12 inches after a 0.54 inch three day drizzle.
The 17th Annual Big Bend 4H and FFA Livestock Show unfolds January 21 at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair Warehouse in Alpine. Exhibits include 12 club steers, 100 fat lambs, and 50 capons from Brewster Jeff Davis 4 H Club and Alpine FFA Chapter with judges Jim Bob Steen Woodrow Mills and others.
Board President Neville Haynes said 15 applications have been received for the superintendent post to fill the vacancy created by Peyton Cain on June 30, 1961. All applicants are Texas teachers and the board expects to name a successor after reviewing all applications.
The sales committee of the Big Bend Livestock Show will convene at 10 a.m. Wednesday January 11 in County Agent Billy Hills office on the courthouse square. All interested persons are invited to attend. The new county agent's office opened December 24.
Chief petty officer and Navy recruiter Harry E. Wright will be at the sheriff's office in the Courthouse Friday January 6 inviting local residents to join the Navy. Bob Stowell, a Texas Tech student, visited relatives over Christmas with his parents and the Evans family.
City of Alpine authorizes Dixon drilling of Odessa to deepen water well test on Meriwether Ranch northwest of Alpine to 500 feet from 450. Original 400 foot depth reached. 100 additional feet cost 700 dollars, plus 25 dollars for setting 500 feet of casing. Motion by C D McCollister seconded by John Richard Whiteside. opposed by Bob Corkins and H C Hernandez. Mayor W E Lockhart voted for. Bill Winter did not vote. Special meeting held last Thursday, Dec. 2.
Representatives from the Big Bend Soil Conservation District join agricultural leaders for the 20th annual Texas Soil Conservation Districts meeting in Dallas January 11 13. Alpine supervisors Caven Woodward and Jimmy Pate will attend as part of a statewide program highlighting demonstrations entertainment and a soil and water show. The district serves 99 percent of Texas farmers and ranchers across over 100 million acres.
Funeral services for Alice Sproul were held in Fort Davis Presbyterian Church with Rev. S. M. Mims and others assisting. She died December 28 in an El Paso hospital after a Dec 17 transfer. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery and pallbearers included five nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings and extended family noted. burial arranged by Kelley Funeral Home of Marfa.
Postmaster Billy West reports Alpine postal receipts for 1960 at 59,326.94 dollars, up 3,011.73 from 1959’s 56,315.21 dollars, marking a 5.35 percent increase. Historical figures include yearly totals dating back to 1910.
Six Brewster County residents consign Charolais cattle to a sale at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition on February 15. Named bidders include Brooks Acton Big Bend National Park Johnny R Adams Arthur and Alice Cavness G A Morriss Rock Springs Alpine and Charlie Wallis Alpine. Auctioneer Walon Houck Karnes City leads the event for the Texas Charolais Charolais Cross Sales Corp.
W E Bill Williams of Alpine announced plans to form a Brewster County Unit of the Texas Division of the American Cancer Society. The first meeting is set for 7 30 p m Thursday Jan 26 in the Sul Ross College chemistry auditorium.
The Sul Ross Speech Department repeats Hamlet with open dress rehearsal tonight at 7 15 p m and a Friday 8 15 performance plus a Saturday 3 p m matinee in the Fine Arts Auditorium on campus. Dr Katharine Boyd directs this production. return of audience familiar with the show.
The 1959 census shows Brewster County with 106 farms valued at 38.33 million dollars up from 101 farms at 29.35 million in 1954. Cattle and calves total 30,710 on 92 ranches, up from 18,900 on 78. Sheep and lambs rise to 90,961 from 87,441, while wool production edges up to 563,724 pounds. Instances of steer and bull cattle increase markedly.
Mayor W E Lockhart praised W T Johns who died in San Angelo. Johns served as Alpine City Water Works superintendent starting in 1988 and guided the system through a time of water shortage with dedicated, all hours service.
Alpine student Miss Sue Bounds completes requirements for a bachelor of fine arts and will be awarded the degree during May commencement at Texas Christian University. A diverse class totaling 137 includes 132 bachelors and 4 masters plus 1 bachelor of divinity from eight states plus DC, Mexico and England. Miss Bounds, majoring in speech correction, is daughter of Mr and Mrs B B Bounds of 305 West Avenue A.
A holiday gathering at the Cobos home included Joe Al from Lubbock, Willie Lee Lees and family from Lubbock, Jim Bosely from El Paso, Josie Losoya's husband, Joe Macias and family from Odessa, Virginia Garcia and Triena from Big Spring, John Voris and Delfina from Sonoma California, and Joe Losoya of El Paso.
