Mexican Border Children Need Vaccines Doctor Says
A local physician warns diphtheria and other diseases threaten residents of Mexican communities opposite Big Bend National Park. He estimates about 1000 children in San Vicente Boquillas and Santa Helena should be vaccinated, vaccine free of charge, with Alpine as the care center. Cash donations for vaccines would go to The Avalanche care of Box 719 Alpine, made out to Project Vaccine.

Herefords Win More Honors at Phoenix and Odessa Shows
Three groups of Herefords took high honors at stock shows in Phoenix Arizona and Odessa last week. At the Arizona National Barbara Grubb's steer was named grand champion while Kimball Ranch calves won Hereford division titles. In Odessa Joe T Lane’s heifer calf was reserve grand champion and won spring heifer class. Lane's crew also placed in other classes. The Kimball calves, bred by Otis and Keesey Kimball of Alpine, previously won reserve overall in 1959. The sale prices and pen placings are noted, with Lane preparing to show in Denver next week.

The second annual Boys and Girls County Government program will run February 6 to 11 in Alpine. Sponsored by the American Legion Post and Auxiliary, the event involves Alpine High School with county officials and local leaders teaching students about county duties. Feb 11 will include practical application day with officials guiding students. The program aims to build citizenship knowledge, with past participation earning a national trophy for youth betterment in Americanism.

Livestock Sale Plans Completed for Big Bend Show
The Big Bend Livestock Show sale set for January 21 will feature two fat steers with a 45 cent floor and 55 cent ceiling. Forty four fat lambs and the champion capon are listed, with no ceiling on champion finewool and crossbred lambs. Lambs have weight limits of 120 pounds except the champions at 100 pounds, and the calf and lamb sale is limited to one per feeder.
