Alpine High School basketball saw Coleman Bluecats defeat the Bucks 78 63 in Ozona at Davidson Memorial gym before a record crowd. Duane Smith of Alpine starred early while Coleman’s Cleveland and Byerly shone in the second half as fouls tallied 17 to 18 and the Bluecats pulled away after halftime.

A district court jury found the late R. W. Smith of Ector county sane when he made his will and that it should be admitted to probate. Contested by H. W. Smith of Odessa and Emmet C. Smith of Amarillo, the estate valued over 50 000 was left to his wife two grandsons Buckner Orphans' home in Dallas and Mrs Tilly Love sister in law by his first marriage. Bequests included mineral rights on eight Ector county sections and a Paisano Baptist encampment house for Smith chapel members. Grand jury to report. Marathon Woman Emma Gulihur Dies After Short Illness
Emma Elizabeth Gulihur of Marathon died last Sunday after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Marathon Methodist Church with Rev. Doyle Riley. Burial followed in Marathon cemetery. She was born June 12, 1891 in Nine Texas and married William G. Gulihur in 1910. Survivors include her husband, son Fred, daughters Vera McKinney and Alma Chambers, 15 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two sisters, four brothers, and numerous relatives. She was active in the Marathon Methodist Church and local PTA and Missionary society. Pallbearers were her grandsons Rowdy Shackelford Billy Pat McKinney Robert Causey Clayton McKinney Norman Gulihur and Ted Henderson.

Smith Resigns Valentine Post for Fort Davis School Chief
Herbert D. Smith, who led Valentine independent schools for four years, resigns to become superintendent of Fort Davis schools. Since his arrival Valentine district moved to independent status, boosted valuation from 1.253 to 2.038 million, and added three buses. His wife June Gottholt will teach and coach Fort Davis girls. Smith, a graduate of East Texas Baptist and Sul Ross, previously coached at Marathon.

Local Students Attend Wesley Foundation Meet
Eight Sul Ross students attended the Wesley Foundation Works in Methodism conference for the New Mexico conference in Silver City New Mexico last weekend. Eighty youths from nine state schools registered for the conference. Dr Richard Dunlap of Tucson Arizona was the principal speaker. The District 5 A Baseball sched ule was announced by Alpine superintendent Peyton Cain who was named chairman at a Fort Stockton meeting. Schools Alpine Sanderson Ozona Big Lake Rankin and likely Sonora will compete in a double round robin from April 13 to May 15 with seven innings and weekday and Saturday games. Alpine Bucks rely on pitchers James Thomas Vichie Telo Hernandez and others with new Kokernot uniforms and pre season games against Monahans March 16 and Alpine March 23.

Alpine man Edgar W. Mueller dies after two week illness
Edgar W. Mueller age 39 a resident of Alpine for five and half years died Sunday afternoon in a local hospital after an illness of about two weeks. He came from Nordheim in 1948 for his health. He was a lifelong farmer and later worked as a carpenter. Funeral services were held in Nordheim Wednesday at 3 p.m. with interment in the Nordheim cemetery. Survivors include his widow a son Darryl Wayne 10 a daughter Donna Lynn 7 his mother and eight brothers and sisters.

Former Brewster County Ranchman Convicted in Smuggling Case
W L Babb, ex Brewster County ranchman, was found guilty by a federal jury in Austin on five of nine counts for smuggling Charolaise cattle from Mexico. Louisiana breeder Alphe Broussard pleaded guilty to conspiring to import about 60 head. Mexican ranch owner Antonio Enrique Gilly was also charged. Justice R C Garnett has been homebound but slightly improving.
