Humble Oil Leases Rail Land for Alpine Warehouse

Humble Oil Co has leased a 130 by 150 foot corner tract south of the Southern Pacific depot for a new distribution warehouse in Alpine. Existing Humble service stations are run by Henry Bailey, with two more stations under instruction at Marathon and Marfa. Bids for the Alpine warehouse were to be opened in Midland. Humble has expanded in West Texas and New Mexico over several years.

Alpine to Host Area Meeting of Texas Municipal League

Alpine will host the Texas Municipal League area meeting in August with a Big Bend National Park tour as part of the program. City Secretary Lee Cowell and attendees from nine West Texas cities attended a recent TML gathering in Amens. Cowell also attended a district meeting in Andrews where he joined a committee to organize a 24 county West Texas area.

Geology Lecture by Dr Johns at Sul Ross Campus

Dr Richard H Johns of Caltech will visit Sul Ross Campus Feb 29 and Mar 1 under the Visiting Geoscientist Program of the American Geological Institute. He will cover pegmatites faults and sedimentation in Southern California and magma crystallization. An 8 pm talk on engineering disasters in Southern California is planned Feb 29 in Science Building 315. The event is open to the public.

Central PTA Plans Sprinkler Projects and April Barbecue

Central School PTA will sponsor two spring projects to raise funds for a sprinkler system to water the school grounds. A community barbecue is planned for early April along with the annual AAUW spring luncheon. The Feb 17 meeting opened with a student program by the combined 2nd grade.

Mrs. Beckett Laid To Rest In Marathon Funeral

Funeral services for Mrs Burt Beckett 62 were held at 2 30 p m in the First Baptist Church Marathon with burial in Marathon Cemetery Livingston in charge She died in Van Horn at 6 am Monday after a heart attack She was born May 15 1897 in Childress and married Burt Beckett in 1924 They lived ranching at Comstock Juneau Marathon Lee Kokernot Ranch and Oi Ranch He operated horse concessions in Big Bend National Park She is survived by her husband two sisters Mrs Adams and Mrs Ab Humphreys of Sonora and a foster daughter Mrs Bobby Jobes of Alpine.

Lobo Home Games Set Against East Texas Lions and Sam Houston

Sul Ross State College Lobos schedule two home matches to close the 1360 basketball season. They face East Texas Lions in Alpine on Saturday night February 27 and host Sam Houston Monday night February 29 to keep their Lone Star Conference record unblemished.

Heil Files For County Tax Office

Vic Heil filed officially for a place on the ballot in the Brewster County Democratic primary May 7 for the newly created county tax assessor-collector post. Deadline is midnight March 7. The county's election results also certified, with Jim Skinner unopposed for sheriff. The new assessor-collector will take office Jan 1, 1961. salary estimated at 4000 to 4500 dollars.

Lake View Bears edge Alpine in 4AA girls final

Linda Wagner led Lake View with 25 points while Sandy Norris added 21 as Lake View beat Alpine 56 38 in McCamey to claim the Disney 4AA girls basketball title. Alpine's Alda Hernandez scored 12 and Victoria Gallego 10 as Alpine also saw Rosie Adamson lead Alpine B 27 points in a separate win over Lake View B.

Jeff Graham and Bud Powers filed to seek two seats on the Alpine School Board for the election set Saturday April 2. The deadline for filing is Wednesday March 2. Terms of Press 3 C Coleman and Billy Wai expire this year. neither has announced reelection plans. Snow Benefits Ranch Lands In West Texas

Snow ranging from a trace to 3 inches brought moisture to the Big Bend Davis Mountains region. Alpine received just over 2 inches, with surrounding ranches reporting good coverage. Reports place Marfa missing the snow while El Paso saw heavy falls. Midland and Lubbock roads remained open but hazardous. Ranchers expect the moisture to aid upcoming spring grass.

Filings for Alpine city aldermen include D. McCollister and John Richard Whiteside while Alpine School Board names Jeff Graham and Bud Powers. County tax assessor-collector Vic Heil files. Meter readings start Monday with Februaries end date Feb 29. officials say response has been gratifying and the plan may continue into April subject to new administration approval after April 3 election. Watch Shop Moves to Granada Building

Stacy Watson announced the watch shop will open in the Granada Theater Building on Monday morning February 29 occupying the former theater owner's upstairs office. The business will continue at 107 E. Holland with merchandise for the store.
