Mayor Sees $1.50 City Tax Rate PTA Backs Bond Issue

At a Central PTA meeting twenty four people voted unanimously for a proposed Alpine school bond. Mrs. Pate reported the School Board values Chamber of Commerce input and will publish answers to questions about consolidation staff growth funding and tax cost per child before the bond election.

CC Directors Hear Urban Renewal Success Reports

South Texas residents told Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors that Urban Renewal programs in Crystal City and Mercedes have spurred growth and housing improvement. UK leaders Sam Anderson and Joe Winston cited public support and noted that Alpine must hold hearings for any proposed project even if a referendum passes.

Pool Leaks Being Fixed After Construction

Mayor Homer Hudgins told the City Council that a contractor found cause for leaks in the new municipal pool and repairs are under way. A leak in the filter system and joints failed to bond, prompting use of asphalt tar to seal expansion joints. The pool was built by J. D. Burk Construction Co. of San Angelo.

U S 90 Bids Set For April In Alpine

Resident Engineer Sid Surratt says bids for the 2 way U S Highway 90 system in Alpine will open in April. Regular April contract settings fall on the 25th and 26th. Final plans are being sent for approval as east bound traffic uses Holland Avenue and westbound traffic will use Avenue E after widening and resurfacing.

Casner Proposes City Water Sale at 15 Cents

Water Supt Hollis told the City Council Casner would sell water from wells near Alpine for 15 cents per 1000 gallons and build a pipeline to the City system. Mayor Hudgins asked for a written offer while the council seeks court interpretation of the Largent contract over free water rights for property owners. The case aims for a district court declaratory judgment.

Alpine Girls Win District Title in District GAA Battle

Alpine High School girls basketball team defeated Canutillo for the District GAA title Tuesday night in Van Horn. Florianna Villa scored 13 of Alpine's 21 third quarter points to break away. Villa led the team with 28 points, Lorena Portillo added 9, and Alpine advances to face the District 5AA winner for bi district power in a game at Stanton or McCamey.

PTA Elects New Officers for Central Group

Officers of the Central PTA for next year were elected at Monday night’s meeting. Chester Mines was named president with James West as 1st vice president and Paul Weyerts as 2nd vice president Ed Foley secures the secretary post Stacy Watson the treasurer Mrs Sam Brownlee presented the nominating report. A committee to buy more ground equipment was appointed Albert Hallford chair W E Ansley Edwin Chappell and Stacy Watson. Plans for a May 2 field day were announced with more events for children and prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd places. Miss Ann MacMurray led a three group Junior High Band in a well received concert and a standing ovation followed. Mrs Winn invited attendees to tour the shower and locker facilities for Junior High students at Central.

The Sul Ross basketball team will play the Mexican Olympic team in Ojinaga Mexico on Saturday March 1 and Sunday March 2. The public information office announced the schedule late yesterday.

Civil Defense Head to Quit Alpine Role

John King the long time Alpine Civil Defense director plans to resign March 1 and move to Dallas. Councilman Tom Connor said King spoke by phone to his Alpine mother about leaving and that Police Chief Herman Hamilton has urged placing the dispatcher system under the police department.

Alpine discusses possible tax cut and city needs

City of Alpine may set 1969 tax rate at or below 1.50 per 100 valuation, possibly 1.45, to yield about 130 to 135 thousand dollars. Mayor Homer Hudgins cited debts, a bulldozer for garbage disposal, worn equipment, and rising costs as reasons for seeking more revenue. The council approved contracts, bids, and a March rezoning hearing, and set a 1969 city election date.

Weed Burning Period Extended By City

The City Council extended the weed burning period on vacant lots without permits through Sunday March 2. Residents planning to burn must notify the police dispatcher at 837-3486 before starting, with the first period running February 7 to 16.
