A letter from J M Reading of Mart Texas praises Alpine readers for helping a stranded traveler near Terlingua. A New Jersey railway clerk also notes Alpine is more modern than Collier's suggested, while Wilfred’s humorous column prompts a sock in the mouth joke.
Mrs. Wm Mangold 33 daughter of George Koury of Alpine died in a Los Angeles hospital last Saturday after an extended illness. She and her husband and their young son Rex visited the Kourys in Alpha for a week in September 1946 and were known to several residents. The funeral was held Monday in Los Angeles and Mr Koury could not attend. He had spent several days with her during the Christmas holidays.
Scientists, journalists and guests gathered at McDonald Observatory to view Mars during its February clos est approach. Dr. Kuiper outlined that Mars shows no higher plant life, no liquid water, and minimal oxygen or ozone, with conditions akin to high altitude Earth. He credited Mount Wilson research and praised Dr. Otto Struve for founding the observatory. The group later observed the Moon and Saturn, stressing ongoing collaboration between the University of Texas and the University of Chicago.
Dr. Ross A. Maxwell superintendent reports progress on park road work in Big Bend National Park. NPS highway engineer Sam Hendricks inspected the site last week and urged continuing work at speed. About 15 miles of road have been graded to sub grade and traffic continues daily in dusty conditions with safe travel noted.
A brief light earthquake near Alpine about midnight Thursday caused no damage and woke few residents. Seismographs at Texas University and Loretta Academy El Paso recorded the tremor which appeared local to the area. The only nearby quake in recent years was a 1931 event near Valentine causing more damage.
W. B. Bill Dorris and Gordon Barrow, prominent Alpine figures, announced this week their candidacies for city commissioner. An April election will choose two commissioners and a mayor as incumbent mayor L. B. Starns and commissioners G. W. Baines and Clay Holland decline re election.
The county reports funding shortages but plans to oil 10 to 12 miles and pile 10 miles by June 30. Rock crusher setup will provide gravel for muddy areas. Alpine park road work advances with five miles paved and 80 percent of the dirt work on the second five miles done. Right of way for the second ten miles is being pursued, with half deeded and landowners donating. A hearing in Austin on February 27 aims to secure completion of the five and a half mile stretch east of Alpine to re‑route bad curves and finish the final survey this year.
Dr. T. H. Etheridge, dean of Sul Ross College, leaves Tuesday for Atlantic City New Jersey as an official delegate to a Kappa Delta Pi meeting and to represent the college at the American Association of Teachers Colleges gathering. He may attend the American Association of School Administrators conference and will return about March 1, with Dr. G P Smith acting as dean in Etheridge’s absence.
The executive committee of the 15th district Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers has unanimously accepted Alpine's invitation to host the district conference here this spring. The conference will occur April 7-8, with the district board of managers meeting on the evening of April 6. A large number of out-of-town visitors is expected for the session.
Colt judging of the fourth annual Big Bend Livestock show begins at 10 a m this morning at Kokernot Field home of the Alpine Cowboys. Cattle judging follows at 2 p m today while lamb and steer judging are slated for tomorrow at 9 a m and 1 p m respectively. The auction sale is set for 2 30 p m tomorrow. Organizers expect strong attendance if favorable weather continues.
A list from Alpine area shows multiple residents receiving medical care. Major operations include Mrs. M. R. Frederickson, George Brown, Jose Moreno on February 16 or 14. Minor procedures include Nita Cano. Other patients include Mark Snowden Jo Thornton J C Ochoa Mrs. Jane Caradine Dixie Lee Obes Patricia Wilson.

Juan Vasquez received a five year sentence after pleading guilty to burglary in district court for the theft of the Forchheimer store. The February grand jury returned three indictments including Vasquez, Jimmy Fierro for forging a instrument, and Adelino Ogas for murder assault. Civil cases and motions were disposed, a petit jury was summoned for next Monday, and the criminal docket set for March 1.
U S Chief Justice and Alpine police veteran aged 80 died after a brief illness following a stroke. He served as town marshal and later chief of police for two decades and was a longtime Woodmen of the World member. Surviving are his widow two daughters and a grandson. Funeral to be held at the Baptist church at 3 p m.
Sul Ross Lobo basketball team under Coach Red Pierce returns from New Mexico with two conference victories placing them third in the standings behind Adams State and Eastern New Mexico State. A win at Portales Feb 27 and at Goodwell Mar 1 could clinch second. The Lobos face St Mary’s University in Alpine in non conference games tonight and tomorrow. Pierce reports the team in fine condition with veteran starters Bob Mathis Crane J R Pryde James Williams Bob Higdon Buddy Nichols and reserves ready to step in.
Mr and Mrs J W Gilmer attended the funeral of Mrs Terese McGregor in El Paso on Monday. Mrs McGregor was the mother of Mrs Jesse B Gilmer.
President R M Hawkins of Sul Ross college received an invitation from the National Educators Assn to attend a United Nations Institute at Lake Success New York February 26 27 and 28 The institute aims to let leading educators study the UN work first hand Hearings on the Security Council and UNESCO discussions will be available and a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel is planned The invitation was sent by Earnest C Melby dean of NYU School of Education The event will precede Trans Texas first flight here by early March
The Alpine PTA met Monday at 3 30 PM in the high school auditorium with Rev. Austin H Dillon speaking on The Weeds identifying intolerance prejudice hatred and ignorance. Mrs Joe Hord honored Founders Day and recalled earlier celebrations while Mrs Webb’s first grade won the room award. Plans were made for the district conference to be held here April 7 8 chaired by Mrs Guy Crawford with two luncheons a tea or reception and a managers banquet for all PTA workers.

Representatives from Sul Ross College and seven other Texas institutions met at Southwestern University in Georgetown to discuss a proposed Pioneer Intercollegiate Conference. Plans include annual forensics tournaments and a fine arts festival with a final meeting at St Marys University on March 5 to complete organization.
The Trans-Texas Airways will inaugurate air service to the Alpine and Marfa area around March 1, using the army air field between the towns until local fields meet CAA specs. Special cadets will be provided for Alpine and Marfa post offices, with air mail covers for the first flight needing authorization for cachet placement.
Alpine hosts its tenth annual junior basketball tournament concluding with Wink High School juniors defeating Fort Davis for the division title. Awards list multiple classifications with Wink, Fort Davis, Marfa, and Butz among top finishers. event spread over Marfa and Alpine, included a Coca Cola concession counter and a minor blackout.
