Alpine resident Mr. Fred P. Gibson writes a humorous reply to the noisiest switch engines, praising train noise as a lifelong price of living near rail lines. The column also shares reader notes from Mrs. G and Mrs. Geear about Cal and Texas, plus a jokey cure for a local complainer.
Rainbow Girls will hold a cake and pie sale tomorrow morning at 10 o clock on North Sixth Street opposite M system Grocery. Proceeds support their activities.
In Austin a state Game Commission report notes record low losses in antelope trapping for restoration. New cotton mesh traps and dimly lit transport reduced deaths, with 400 antelopes moved from Marfa and Alpine to understocked ranges on the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos.
Thirty five workers began the Boy Scout finance campaign turning in about half the goal on the first day. Fred Griffin's mop up committee aims to finish this week. A Sunday Scout service at the Baptist church was a success with two First Class Scouts leading the pledge and oath. Several Scouts received badges and merit awards as other local groups supported Scouting activities.
Sponsors seek resident input on renaming El Progreso Public Library now housed on the court house lawn. No new suggestions yet. if none arrive in two weeks the current name remains. A two year library membership is offered in the name contest while the library operates Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays. Mrs. Paul Vogt chairs the El Progreso club effort.
Alpine Lodge 806 I. O. O. F. elected officers Monday night led by H. B. Pruett as N. G. and W. H. King as W. G. Other roles filled include Loyd Milam treasurer C. E. Treadwell Sr. chaplain and J. M. Allen as warden. The lodge will confer the third degree next Monday night and invites all members to attend.
Body of Lt. Horace Weatherly Morelock U S N R killed in action May 25 1945 in the mid Pacific is expected to arrive in San Francisco this week and will be taken to Austin for a military funeral. He was born July 4 1909 in Kerrville and educated at Sul Ross Alpine and WTSC Canyon. Survived by parents Dr and Mrs H W Morelock and two sisters Mrs John W Washington and Mrs Malone V Hill.
Marathon edged Marfa 40 39 in overtime to topple the conference leader and then Valentine upset Short horns 32 27 in Marfa. District standings show Marathon leading at 87 percent, with Marfa 75, Fort Davis 66, Valentine 62.5, Blackwell 33.3, Sanderson 20 and Alpine 0. In girls volleyball Marfa leads with Marathon second and Alpine third.
A new cold spell hit the Alpine area on Wednesday driving temperatures to an official low of 10 above overnight. Snow fell Wednesday night and Thursday morning, totaling 3.0 inches with little moisture as skies began clearing by mid-morning.
A commercial grade iron ore deposit was found at the Bird mine about ten miles east of Alpine by Ben Scott, lessee, who has been doing development work. Core drilling has been ongoing for a year, with several cars of rich lead ore shipped years ago. A profitable market is being sought.
Alpine Texas mayor L B Starns proclaims Friday February 13 as World Day of Prayer. Citizens are urged to attend at 7 30 p m at the Methodist church or observe the event in other ways to seek divine guidance for peace and world understanding. Attest City Secretary John Stovell.
A 71 by 20 foot condex block building rises beside Ezell laundry on East Holland avenue to house Winter Cleaners. The adjacent laundry will be renovated as well with new equipment planned. Owner Wm I Winter says new services and prices will be announced later in The Avalanche.
Marfa outclassed Alpine 57 to 25 as the Shorthorns rallied from a 19 to 13 halftime deficit. De Volin starred for Marfa while Uranga Spann and Keane led the Bucks in scoring. Alpine next plays Fort Davis, with Marfa hosting Blackwell of Marfa on Feb. 17.

Funeral services were held for Witt Stack 55 a well known barber of Alpine at 2 p m yesterday at the Christian church He died suddenly at his home Monday Born Chico June 28 1892 he came to Alpine in 1923 and worked as a barber in Alpine Van Horn and Marfa He was survived by his widow two children and four stepchildren plus a brother and sister Funeral services were officiated by Rev L W Bridges Interment was in Elm Grove cemetery.
The Fabric shop moves this week from North Fifth Street to the former Scales Bros. location next to The Model on North Sixth Street. Proprietor Mrs. Curly Davis says the move will better prepare them to serve customers and invites former patrons and new customers to visit.
Grand jurors are summoned for the February term of district court opening next Monday. A light session is expected with few civil cases and only two criminal trials likely. Defendants Manuel Robledo and Cecilio Rodriguez face murder and assault with intent to murder charges. Jurors listed hail from Alpine and Marathon. A petit jury is summoned for February 23.
Scales Bros reopen in Holland avenue quarters damaged by last Septembers fire. Formal opening is tomorrow from 3 to 6 pm with renovations and new fixtures. The 1948 line of electric refrigerators washing machines deep freezes and radios will be shown. Refreshments will be served. Shirley Scales said J C Penneys quarters should be ready about March 15.
Plans for the fourth annual Big Bend Livestock show at Kokernot field include 125 lambs 30 baby beeves 57 colts and 20 registered Herefords. An auction of 50 lambs and four steers is slated for 2 30 p m Saturday with Don Estes conducting. Prizes totaling about 800 are offered to 4H and FFA youths from Brewster and Jeff Davis counties plus 250 from Alpine chamber of commerce.
The five room custom built home on East Ave E by P D Coulson and D P Sublett has been sold to Mr and Mrs George W Baker. The Bakers recently relocated from Terrell County where they owned a ranch.
A. M. Warnock, 67, prominent Fort Stockton farmer and dairyman, died last Saturday in an Alpine hospital after a week there. He had been in poor health for some time. Funeral services were held at the Fort Stockton Baptist church on Sunday afternoon. He leaves a widow, a daughter and three sons.
Calves from Brewster and Jeff Davis counties earned top placements at the Fort Worth Fat Stock show. An O6 Kokernot ranch calf placed third in medium weight, with three calves securing second in a trio group and one finishing 10th in lightweight. Joe Gallego Jr. of Alpine showed steers placing fifth in a trio, and 11th and 12th in single classes. Brooks Acton of Fort Davis entered an O6 calf that placed eighth in heavyweights, while Chris Kouitz of Fort Davis placed seventh in the junior heavy-weight division. Nine calves total represented the two counties.
Work has started on a custom-built frame home for Mr and Mrs D P Sublett. The residence will have five rooms a garage and a rumpus room adjoining the garage.
Patricia Ward and Edith Richardson receive hospital treatment in Alpine. Jimmy Evans from Bakersfield undergoes major surgery on February 9. Joe Richardson is treated, and Ann Estell and Nina Lee McBride, daughters of H. J. McBride, also receive care in Alpine.
