Small fires reported in two calls this week
The fire department responded to two alarms last week. One from The Avalanche last Thursday noon and one Wednesday afternoon at the G Noel residence on West College Avenue and North 6th Street. A grass fire in the yard burned a wooden trellis. only slight damage occurred. The Avalanche blaze also caused little damage.

Petrified Trees Mistaken for Dinosaur Remains Near Alpine
In Big Bend country near Alpine, petrified trees were found on the Anja Wilson ranch, about 70 miles southeast of Alpine. Geologist McAnulty declared the two jointed tree trunks, eight and four inches in diameter, are likely Cretaceous age about 80 million years old with ten feet unearthed and excavation ongoing.

Booster Club declines to sponsor Sul Ross rodeo
Sul Ross Booster club directors voted against holding the May rodeo amid financial risk concerns. The group had planned a deal with Raymond Quigg and Chile Cole of Marathon for staging, but ruled the effort too risky for the athletic program. Funeral for War II Veteran Leandro Juarez Held with Honors
Pvt. Leandro Juarez, who died July 13 1943 from wounds in France, was buried with full military honors in Alpine. The body arrived with a military escort after four months overseas, including a stint in England before the invasion. Flags stood at half mast as locals mourned the 19 year old, whose father Jose Juarez died last week.
