Alpine news notes that Miles Pierce could not bring home the Golden Bell trophy from Fort Worth as it was stolen soon after he won it. The Alpine Avalanche reports readers and subscribers, updates on oldest subscriber J B Pruett of Marfa, and local items from Alpine and the Big Bend.
Alpine will travel to Ozona to face Coleman in the first round regional playoff at Davidson Memorial Gym Monday night February 21. The game, a rematch after last year’s 78-63 Coleman win, will be at 8 p.m. Admission is 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for students and children. Officials from the Southwest Basketball Officials Association are assigned, with Curly Hayes and Shorty Lawson probable as referees.
Brewster County Commissioners' Court named election judges for five precincts and absentee ballot judges. Presiding judges include J C Cody East Alpine and Clifton Moss West Alpine, with multiple clerks and election clerks to be named later.
The Back to God Movement sponsored by the American Legion will air on ABC Sunday February 20 from 7 to 7 30 p m CST. It will be televised from the marble staircase of Grand Central Station New York City. President Eisenhower Seaborn Collins National American Legion Commander Mrs Percy Lain son American Legion Auxiliary president West Point Chapel Choir Morton Downey and reps of major faiths will speak. Emmett Hutto of Camp Wood named vice president of the Rossonian Chapter of Future Teachers of America. He replaces Tommy Sells who has joined the Navy.
The Sul Ross Lobos host East Texas State in a Lone Star Conference series at home next Monday and Tuesday, then finish the season with Corpus Christi University in a Feb 25-26 set. Hanson and Lewalian led scoring in recent Lamar Tech losses. Baseball workouts began with 40 plus prospects. opening day is March 11-12 at Tucson against Arizona University. Other opponents on the Lobo schedule include Baylor Texas Tech and New Mexico. Mrs. Don Hume of San Diego visits her parents in town.
Construction will begin this summer on a 900000 dollar highway bridge over the Pecos River. The 270 foot high deck truss structure will span about 1200 feet with a 28 foot pavement and 18 inch refuges each side. About 6000 feet of new road work is included and the bridge replaces the current low water crossing.
The United States Geological Survey begins a cooperative ground-water survey of Alpine area resources. Brews ter County and Texas state agencies fund the project with field mapping, well canvassing, and analysis of logs and drill cuttings to assess recharge movement and discharge and ensure municipal stock domestic and irrigation needs are met. Lead personnel are Robert T. Littleton and Glenn L. Audsley.
The Alpine Lions and guests enjoyed a Tuesday ladies night at the Holland Hotel dining room. Inductees J E Gray Paul Powell Winston Wilson Jack Williams and O L Kay were welcomed as new members. District Governor Kay spoke on Lionism as the Hungry Five from Alpine High School performed. Eighty six attended including D D Thomas and the Knight couple. Catholic Women’s Study Club to hold all day rummage sale February 19 in the Berkeley Building.
Riess, a veteran water prospector with 80 primary wells, visited Alpine to locate an emergency supply. After a whirlwind inspection Feb 10 11 and 12, he predicted water and planned 12 day rock tests to confirm. If validated, a drilling site near Suless College would be chosen for Alpine.
Alpine Rotary Club marks Rotary International’s 50th anniversary with Ladies Night at the Holland Hotel. Mrs Jack Williams Sul Ross College student will speak. Dr C B Casey of Sul Ross presides. Awards honor Shirley Scales J W Wright and another charter member. Dennis Brown and E Milton Smith chair events. reservations due by Tuesday.
Lee S. Dickson was appointed justice of peace for Marathon precinct 3 by County Judge Felix McGaughy. He succeeds Virginia Young Granger, who declined to qualify this year after years of write in campaigns. At the same meeting, First National Bank in Alpine was named depository for county and school funds for 1955 56, and Dr. Joel Wright of Alpine was reappointed county health officer for two years. Warner Construction Co. of San Angelo wins the second story addition to Hancock Hall at Sul Ross State College for 69.32 dollars with a September 1, 1955 completion date. The project adds 58 beds for boys and was announced by President Bryan Wildenthal after a Regents meeting in Austin February 9–11.
The Brewster County unit of the Texas State Teachers Association will meet at 7:30 pm on Monday February 21 in the Marathon High School Library. A musical program from Sul Ross State Teachers College includes Mrs Donnell Simpson Mrs Carol Waters and Merle Waters with Bettigene Humes to sing. Mrs Beria Lassiter TSA executive committee member will report on teacher retirement plans and attend the Austin meeting. Refreshments will be served by Marathon faculty.
Big Bend Post 79 of the American Legion will present an American Flag to the Girl Scout Hut. The action was taken at Monday night’s regular meeting. Joe Clark and Jimmy Pate are donating pipe for the flagpole. Volunteers including Jimmy Eichholtz Bill Dorris and Douglas Dorris will paint the Hut with a spray gun. Brewster County Grand Jury meets this week with no indictments by press time. Members listed include G B Crawford foreman M C Kay Francis Miles J G Barrow H 2 Wack Cross D L Cross H 5 Hernandez H W Carpenter Diver Theophilus W J Newell Alpine residents and others. Snakies Rowell, son of Mrs Vet Rowell of Alpine, has been promoted to corporal. Rowell has served in the military for 212 years.
