Bucks Triumph in District Championship Over Pecos

Alpine High School clinched its third straight district title by defeating Pecos in an overtime thriller at Pecos High gym. The Bucks, 38-38 at regulation, pulled away in overtime behind Jimmie Matlock and Elisio Hernandez as Pecos suffered a costly loss. The game marked the Bucks’ seventh straight district win in the current series, extending their dominance since 1949.

Knights Templar Hold Annual Inspection in Alpine

About 100 Knights attended the Alpine Commandery No. 90 inspection at the Masonic Hall last Saturday led by Gus L. Meyer of San Antonio. The event drew 180 Knights and ladies. a buffet supper followed at the new Community Center. Mrs. Bertha Conner, 84, died in Taylor. funeral held today.

R Moser dies after long Alpine residence

Richard Moser age 80 longtime Alpine resident died yesterday at the home of Mrs Walter Graet in East Alpine after months of ill health. A native of Australia he mined in Oregon then lived in the Hawaiian Islands before moving to Alpine. He operated a truck farm here. A sister and two nieces in California survive with funeral arrangements pending.

West Texas Utilities Opens New Alpine Office in Masonic Building

West Texas Utilities Co will open at 8 30 a m Monday Feb 14 in the Masonic Building Alpine manager Heron Littleton announced An open house will be Feb 16 from 10 a m to 5 p m Gifts for ladies favors for children and refreshments will be available Demonstrations will include Frigidaire ranges washers and refrigerators The ground floor was renovated and a ladies lounge added Three times more display space than the old office and all activities will be housed in the new Alpine location formerly spread across three sites in Alpine.

Sul Ross Spring Enrollment Rises to 706 Students

Sul Ross reports 706 students enrolled for spring term, a near ten percent rise from 1954. About a quarter are new, with 27 Alpine residents among them. The gain spans all departments, not concentrated in any one area, according to college officials.

City Franchise Granted To Alpine TV Service

The City Commission approved a non exclusive franchise for Alpine Community Television Company to operate a wired television service in Alpine. The firm includes Gene Hendryx KVLF manager, Jack Hawkins, and Barney Hubbs of Pecos. No equipment plans announced.

Ninety six 1955 motor licenses issued in county

Ninety six 1955 licenses for motor vehicles had been issued at the county tax collector's office up to Wednesday noon. Registration 1 started Feb 1 with April 1 the final deadline. Licenses issued included 72 passenger vehicles 11 trucks 11 farm and two trailers.

Former Resident Dies in Ohio Sister of Irma Lee Richardson

Mrs W D Burcham was called to Euclid Ohio last Wednesday by the death of her sister Mrs Hugh Hoffer the former Miss Irma Lee Richardson who lived in Alpine years ago. Burial was at Mansfield Ohio last Friday. Mrs Hoffer is survived by husband two sisters Mrs Burcham and Mrs Bertha Bennett and two brothers F C Richardson and Jack Verner Richardson.

Alpine Scouts Open New Hut With Community Open House

The Alpine Girl Scout unit unveiled a new $10,000 house that drew hundreds last Sunday. Scouts and Brownies hosted guests, served refreshments, and toured two large meeting rooms restrooms and a kitchen. Local funds financed the building with officers Jimmy Pate president H J McBride vice president Mrs Roscoe Morgan secretary and Mrs Ella McBride treasurer and building chair.

Statewide support for Big Bend park dedication planned

Paul Forchheimer of Alpine announced Texas wide support for the Big Bend National Park dedication next fall. He was named chairman of the Big Bend National Park Development Committee Inc at the executive committee meeting in the Chamber of Commerce building. Other officers named were W. J. Newell vice-chairman Dick Rogers treasurer and G. C. McDaniel secretary all of Alpine. An enlarged directorate with broader state scope will be named later.

Mining Firm Equipment Damaged In Shed Blaze

A shed at Universal Service Corp. near Lajitas burned early this week destroying a gasoline lantern, a pneumatic hose and drill rods. Damage estimated at 1000 dollars. Shareholders voted to increase capitalization and authorize a four for one stock split to holders of record February 28, 1955. Universal is prospecting for uranium in Southern Brewster and Presidio Counties.

Man Who Can Find Water In Rock To Visit Alpine

Alpine officials expect Stephan Riess known as the man who can find water in rock to inspect and assist in locating a new water supply. Riess, featured in a Colier's magazine article, agreed to come after telegraphic invitations from Mayor Hugh White and City Commissioners. Officials say his survey will not replace Brewster's efforts.

Sul Ross Lobos to Face Lamar Tech After Weekend Wins

Sul Ross Lobos traveled to Beaumont for games with Lamar Tech after sweeping McMurry in Abilene. Hansen led with 15 in the 75-63 opener, then 18 for Hansen and 16 by Pearson in a 79-74 close. The Lobos sit 12-8 overall and 3-5 in conference as they head to East Texas State.

Christian Church Youth Center Dedicated Tonight in Alpine

Art Wenger of Texas Christian University will speak at the First Christian Church dedication at 7:30 p.m. The new Youth Center, though not fully furnished, is in use with a recreation room lounge college snack bar and classrooms. A car auction by Casner Motor Co. boosted funds for furnishings. Members are invited to attend and tour the facilities after the service.
