Alpine Civic League Elects New Officers At Holland Hotel

The Alpine Civic League reorganized and elected officers for the year at the Holland Hotel. President Mary Haynes, Vice President Anna Line, Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Lins. The group outlined park and street beautification, plant exchanges, and a yards contest, with a tree distribution planned for March at Tourist Park. A membership drive starts soon, with ward chairmen named, and a rally tonight at 8:30 to discuss plans and the renaming of the city park. Crystal City visitor Mrs. Charles F. Jackson spent several days in Alpine with local residents.

Annual Golf Tournament Here Next Week

Local golfers announce a 36 hole tournament to be held next week with invitations extended to Pecos exon Sierra planea and the Spring City club of Fort Stockton. Jimmie Keefer, club president, says Alpine players are training daily and expect a strong showing.

Alpine Goes on Air From Stockton Station

Alpine was heard on air for the first time Wednesday night when Sul Ross college orchestra and Alpine Rotary club sextet performed at the Spring City opening of the broadcasting station KGFI owned and operated by M. L. Hayes. A continuous program began at 6 p.m. with reception strong at Fort.

Mexican Americanization Program Set for February 22

An Americanization program will be held in the Mexican Community hall on February 22, Washington's Birthday. Sponsored by the Pine Study Club, Alpine citizens are urged to attend. Readings, songs, a flag salute, a garden pantomime, a history pageant, and exhibits by Mexican women and pupils will be presented under teachers Mrs Roy Lassiter Miss Merrill Pouncey and Miss Altha Yates with talks on Americanization and displays of papers and posters.

West Texas Geological Society Plans Alpine Field Trip

The West Texas Geological Society and the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology plan a joint field trip into the Glass Mountains near Alpine. They expect 100 to 160 participants, staying February 25 and 26, seeking accommodations and a conference venue. The Alpine Chamber of Commerce will host the event, with a committee arranging lodging for the group.

River Mexicans Fined $100 in County Court

Two river Mexicans, Jacoba and Santos Billalba, brothers, were assessed fines of $100 and costs by Judge James A. Burke in county court Tuesday. The Mexicans were charged with carrying pistols. Bernard Overstreet of Del Rio visited his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Fate, here last Saturday and Sunday.

Alpine Considers Remote Broadcast Link With Fort Stockton

Rev Mok waves owner operator of Fort Stockton station spoke before Alpine chamber directors proposing Alpine to broadcast from that station via remote control. A full Alpine station could cost thousands. a copper wire link would give Alpine local letters announcer and ads while sharing Fort Stockton’s reach. A committee including Cas Edwards H W Moretock F K Gillett S Seales and John Perkins will investigate and seek a local Alpine station if the plan fails. Deputy Sheriff Ness Miller visited El Paso this week.

Alpine Seeks To Draw More Tourist Traffic

Alpine officials and chamber of commerce leaders plan to divert tourist traffic from El Paso to San Antonio via the Mexican Border highway. They will erect signs east of Sierra Blanca and in Van Horn directing travelers to the southern route, touting its scenery and shorter travel time. Local towns along the path will contribute to marking the route and promoting the drive.

Marfa Murder Trial to Be Held Here

Luz Carmona, a Mart a Mexican youth, is charged with murdering Cecilia Jamie in Marfa last December. A Presidio county jury deadlocked after 24 hours, split on death penalty vs. leniency, leading Judge Claude R. Sutton to transfer the case to Brewster County. The trial is set for tomorrow with local interest high.
