Near Finish in Wolf Poisoning Campaign

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been saved by Big Bend ranches through a wide scale wolf poisoning effort across Brewster, Jett Davis, and Presidio counties. Led by Tri County Agents Miller and Henry Riley of the U S Biological Survey, the drive exceeded its 30000 bait target by 18000, distributing about 45000 baits over 75 square miles. County agents Miller and Mitchell on Crawford Mitchell's ranch oversaw the rounds, with more than 1000 coyotes reported killed. two to three times that number likely destroyed. The campaign united ranchers county judges and banks in a coordinated plan, building on last year’s smaller effort and expanding extermination to save livestock and reduce pests. Alpine Masons Hold Washington Birthday Meeting

One of the lodge's largest gatherings in months drew 60 plus Alpine Masons and visitors. Important state matters were discussed at the summons meeting requested by the Grand Master. Colonel John Perkins gave a Washington address, honoring George Washington, followed by refreshments for all attendees.

Golfers Here for Tourney Saturday Sunday

Alpine Golf Club prepares for a two day tournament with about thirty top golfers from Midland Fort Stockton Pecos and Alpine. Jimmie Keeler reports the event will tax Alpine to its limit as more than a hundred guests and locals gear up for the competition and related festivities.

Street lighting plan covers 25 new lamps citywide

City commission and Central Power and Light representatives tour the area to map 25 new street lights. Thirteen on College avenue from near the campus to the Terry residence, two around the courthouse block, three on Eighth Street by the school, and lights on streets from the school to the court house and to the Masonic building. Work starts once papers are signed and materials arrive.

Power Company Begins Major Overhaul in City

Work crews arrive to overhaul Central Power and Light distribution in the city at an estimated cost of about $20,000. The project includes taller 25 foot poles, a switch to a three phase system, heavier No 4 or 6 conductors, and a plan to double load capacity with a ten day to two week timeline. About 25 workers will install both the distribution upgrade and the new lighting system with minimal customer disruption.

The Sul Ross Lobos split two games with New Mexico A&M, as Rost missed a game with captain Paul Ford out and guard Lee Smith sidelined. In the first game the Lobos faded late while the Aggies prevailed, and in the Saturday rematch Ford returned and Sul Ross rolled to a 49 14 victory showing a clear gap between the teams.

Carmona Convicted in Death Penalty Case at Marfa

A Brewster County jury convicted Luz Carmona Marta Mextean in district court in Marfa for the December killing of Cecilia Jaime. The panel was unable to agree on punishment, with four voting life and eight for death. Judge Claude R. Sutton presided. Defense argued marijuana use and insanity. attorneys sought a new trial after the verdict.

Night thief robs Holland Hotel as stolen car traced to Mexico

Holland Hotel assistant manager Ward Weakley reports $331 stolen from the hotel safe and cash register after the night clerk’s absence. The thief, James G. Day, allegedly took a touring car from Speedy Taxi Service and fled toward the Mexican border near Presidio, with authorities pursuing a man named Bettis matching Day’s description.

Locating an Alpine Texas astronomical observatory

The University of Texas may establish a million dollar astronomical observatory in Alpine as a bequest from W. J. McDonald of Paris Texas. A committee will visit spring to evaluate climate and conditions and Alpine’s Astronomical Society urges support and fundraising to prepare for authorities.
