Rites Set for Young Sandy Holloway in Alpine

Services planned for Fred Alvin Gandy Holloway Jr. 14 who died in an accidental home explosion near Honolulu Hawaii. Family members including his mother Marion Hopson and father Fred Holloway traveled to Alpine Texas for the service. The body was flown from Honolulu to California and then by train to Alpine. Surviving relatives noted include maternal grandparents and several half-siblings.

County Officials Vote 10 Percent Pay Raise in Brewster

Brewster County Commissioners Court approved a 10 percent raise for elected officials effective February 1. Judge Felix McGaughy cast the deciding vote. City Plans Water Well Drilling on Cartwright Land

City officials announce drilling of a water well on Cartwright land north of the Daugherty site as part of a municipal project. Mayor Hugh White says a Sunny Glen area purchase of W H Terry Jr land is complete, with title in city hands and water rights secured via a sale to Merkel businessman J Largent. The move funds fire station payoff and water system expansion, with tests, bonds, and future servicing through the Collie pipeline discussed at the Monday meeting.

Sul Ross Building Projects To Cost Over 1.5 Million

Sul Ross State College in Alpine plans major construction totaling over 1.5 million dollars for 1956 57. Regents approve new science building athletic field house dormitory and modernization. Bowling alley expansion 40295.50 adds two lanes air conditioning acoustic plaster and spectator lounge. Marquis Hall 10 bedroom addition planned with interior renovation. Four projects completed in the past year.

Jack Found Not Guilty Of Conducting Lottery At Granada

Fred Jack, owner of the Granada and Lobo Theatres, was found not guilty by a County Court Jury yesterday of conducting a lottery at the Granada Theatre on February 6. The charge was brought by Joe Davidson, owner of the Twin Peaks Theatre. The six man jury, in a case before County Judge Felix Me Gaughy, deliberated before returning the verdict.

Alpine ISD praised for strong finances by bonding firm

Alpine School District received commendation from Underwood Bonding Co in its annual audit review. The report notes bonded indebtedness at 142000 dollars and projects becoming debt free by 1961, a rare financial position for districts. The meeting also covered vocational agriculture shop plans and tax collection of 92.29 percent on 118000 possible, with notes on grade handwriting samples.

Newsman ALN Alkire dies at 79 in Fort Davis

Arthur Newton Alkire 79 died in his sleep at his Fort Davis home Saturday Feb 11 after weeks of illness. He was husband of Amy E. Alkire longtime Avalanche Fort Davis correspondent. Born Fulton Missouri he started in newspapers at 17 and later owned The Fort Davis Dispatch with his wife. He leaves two brothers H C of Glasgow and M of Gilliam and several nephews and nieces. Married December 25 1901 in Kalama Michigan. Funeral held as noted in obituary continuation.

Eleven youths fined in sheep killing case at Fort Davis

Eleven young men charged with killing a sheep belonging to Dan Frank pleaded guilty and were each fined five dollars plus costs totaling 27.70 in County Court this week. Names include Charley Taylor John Oscar Boverser Derle Rudd Bill Reed and Dub Polson. Judge Felix Mc Gaughy assessed the fines at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis.
