Quicksilver Mining Upsurge In Terlingua District

Quicksilver mining in the Terlingua District is expanding with six companies active. Lone Star Mercury Inc plans two more 30 ton rotary furnaces, while Terlingua Mercury Corp drills and explores from Fresno Mine to Campo de los Angeles. Motorola radio system to link Alpine offices and district units. Rainbow Mining Co. poised to resume operations under L C Bradford. Other firms considering mercury activity include Wright Clark and Sinkel and Nueces Exploration Corp.

Reserve champion Hereford steer at El Paso show links to Alpine youth

Joe Ramos Jr of Alpine and Sal Rose freshman from Brewster-Jeff Davis 4-H showed the reserve grand champion Hereford steer, Chun ky, at the Southwestern Livestock Show in El Paso. Brewster-Davis 4-H won best group of five calves bred by Highland Hereford breeders. El Paso results list multiple 4-H and FFA exhibitors with top finishes in fat and lamb classes, led by Joe Ramos Jr in open Hereford division.

Sul Ross College Directs Stock Judging Contest

Sul Ross State College will run the 12th Annual FFA and 4 H livestock judging contest with the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in El Paso. Coaches register at 7 30 am in the Livestock Barn. Contenders judge nine classes of sheep cattle and swine and give oral reasons on three. Judges include A J Bierschwabe and Clip and Brand Club members. Trophy by El Paso Optimist Club. banners and medals for winners. About 150 FFA and 4 H members from New Mexico and Texas participate.

March Of Dimes Receipts Listed In Brewster County

Residents of Big Bend National Park led Brewster County's March of Dimes drive, with a total sum of $187.44 from park activities under Stanley Fulcher and staff. Additional contributions include Alpine Country Club dance 22.50, Study Butte coin box 8.19, Castelon 3.60, San Vicente 2.95, and Wagon 327, among others.

Mrs Derrick Former Alpine Resident Dies in El Paso

Mrs Derrick a longtime Alpine resident and charter member of the Alpine Study Club died in El Paso last Sunday. Funeral services were held there. She served in the Alpine Methodist Church and led offices in the church women’s departments. Surviving are four children including Mrs Eugene R Smith and C H Derrick, both of El Paso, and J H Derrick.

Glenn Burgess will present a short film about Mexico at the Alpine High PTA meeting at 7 30 pm Monday in the high school auditorium. Mayo Cleveland, the program director, announced the event.

Geologist Discovers Likely New Mineral in Big Bend Park

Dr Walter W T Huang of Hardin Simmons University reports finding a boracite like mineral in a gypsum setting at Big Bend Park. He notes it may be a previously unclassified mineral in the United States and compares it to substances seen in Louisiana and Oklahoma.

Another Cold Front Brings Snow to Alpine Area

A severe cold front hit Big Bend Davis Mountain country bringing sleet and snow. Alpine logged 3 inches of snow, 0.32 inch water content, with temperatures dipping to 3 degrees above zero. Frigid conditions caused many broken pipes and kept plumbers busy while tourists sought warmer shelter and local businesses benefited.

Highland Butane Co. formed by LaBeff and Underwood

Edward King, Ray LaBeff of Alpine, and D. W. Underwood of Midland announce the formation of Highland Butane Co. effective Feb 4. LaBeff will run the new firm while continuing LaBeff Motor Co. DeSoto and Ply cars, Dodge trucks, and the Willys Jeep will remain in use. Buddy King stays employed. the company will offer butane sales, service, and appliances at competitive prices.

Rambouillet Flock Dominates Fort Worth Show

Pierce Rambouillet breeder from Alpine swept the Rambouillet division at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth last week winning both champion ram and champion ewe. It was his fifth consecutive Fort Worth win with reserve champion ram and several other firsts in Rambouillet classes. He exhibited Rambouillet sheep in Paso this week.

Javrice Dunivan addressed Mpine High School students Wednesday morning as Alpine High officials and Student Council prepared a regular schedule of Alpine Ministerial Alliance appearances. This marks the fifth meeting of this kind by the Alpine High student body. Jerre Williams, a 1CU student in Fort Worth, is visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Pred Williams between semesters.

Mrs Euna Wilks Laid To Rest In Houston Area Service

Funeral services for Mrs Euna Wilks of Alpine and Houston were held at First Methodist Church with Rev Carl Lawson officiating. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery. Born June 3 1871 in Peoria Texas, she married Sam T Wilks in 1890. Surviving are daughters Mrs L C Bradford and Mrs Floyd Slover and numerous descendants.
