PR items announce March 1 opening of bids for a proposed First Baptist Church in Alpine. Architect sketches show two views of a reshaped building that would wrap around the corner of Avenue D and 4th Street with entrances facing 4th Street. Estimated cost is $125,000.
Three hundred Rotarians from New Mexico and West Texas descend on Alpine and Marfa for the District 170 Conference. A 75 to 80 person Park tour departs Marfa at 9 am via Alpine and State Highway 118, with Park Supt George W. Miller steering.

Five men indicted by the Brewster County Grand Jury were tried this week. Faustino Gonzales faced burglary of the Ramos liquor store, receiving a three year term. Earl White admitted stealing a dump truck and drew five years. Pilar Hernandez Young pleaded guilty to second offense drunk driving for a two year adult probation sentence. Transito Rodriguez pled guilty and got a four year probation, and Baldomero received two years probation for burglary. Two trials set for Thursday include Andres Gonzales for assault with intent to murder and Jack Walter Ledingham for DWI second offense.
Alpine High and Slaton High clash in Slaton at 7 30 p m Tuesday Feb 28 for the bi district title Officials from both schools met in Odessa last week to finalize terms Alpine offered a 175 guarantee while Slaton boosted to 200 then 225 for the site and officials Slaton will provide officials and a new RSS basketball If Alpine wins the game advances to face the winner of Districts 1 and 2 AA in Lubbock March 3.
A rabid dog found south of Alpine prompted city officials to urge vaccination for all pets. Dr. Paul Weyerts will vaccinate at his Old Marfa Highway location from 8 am to 6 pm Saturday, with a waived tax. Dogs untagged or unvaccinated by March 1 face capture and placement in the city pound.
The First Baptist Church of Alpine designates Sunday February 26 as Sul Ross College Day to honor Sul Ross students involvement in church and campus life. President Bryan Wildenthal will greet the college. Rev Ralph Wootton will deliver the morning message. college students provide music. Sunday School invites Sul Ross students at 9 45 a m.
Deputy Secretary Jonn Stovell outlined Alpine city government structure to Alpine High government class taught by Coach Curtis Kelley on Wednesday morning.
Fred Jack has been appointed as leader of the Red Cross drive in Alpine and Brewster County for 1956. He said he would announce the appointment of co chairmen and outline drive plans next week.

The Park to Park project seeks federal designation for a highway from Zerrabad Caverns in New Mexico to Big Bend National Park. Marvin Kay urged action at the Tuesday Chamber of Commerce meeting, requesting a highway number for the 0.8 285 mile route from Carlsbed to Pecos then to Balmornen and Fort Davis and Alpine into the park. The highway committee plans to refer the matter to the State Highway Department to begin work soon on funds for parks on State 118 south, deeded to the state.

A spelling bee was held yesterday morning with 10 participants from 190 students. The event lasted 30 minutes. Jane Bohannan, a junior, won first place while Sally LaBelt Meriell McCollum and Kay Young shared second place.
National Park Service Director Conrad Wirth announced that starting this year, three park history dates will be celebrated annually in all NPS areas. Big Bend marks Establishment Day June 12, National Park Service Founders Day August 29, and Campfire Day September 19 at Madison Junction Yellowstone. Supt George W. Miller says ceremonies will honor the park service’s history.
Vice Consul Tapia, in charge of the Mexican Consulate office in Alpine, was elected an honorary member of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce board. His office serves a large area of West Texas.
