The February National Geographic highlights a guided horseback trip along a trail with a sweeping view of the Rio Grande and Mexico. The piece emphasizes the landscape and the experience of riding through the region.
Dr. S R Meaker and Mrs Meaker with R A Mc Dowell arrive in Alpine from Gatlinburg Tennessee to join the community. McDowell retired after 35 years with Standard Oil and Mrs McDowell worked in Southern Bell and is a nurse and organist. Dr Meaker served in the New York State Education Department and teaches health courses while Mrs Meaker lectured in public health and trained in dental hygiene. Local residents Hal Edwards and Peter Koch welcomed the newcomers expressing confidence in their choice of home.
Sul Ross Lobo basketball team faces Texas A I on Saturday at 8 p m in Sul Ross Gym seeking a rematch win to shake a four game road skid and climb toward fifth place. Coach Van Cleef unveils Hud son, Caffey, Walker, and a guard pair with Jackson or O D n nel l at center.
Nineteen teams will join Alpine Central School for a two day youth basketball tourney starting Friday at 4 p.m. and finishing Saturday night. Teams include Alpine Centennial Presidio Blackwell Marfa Barstow and Alpine Central in the taller boys division plus several small boy and girls divisions with local clubs such as Van Horn Valentine Balmorhea and Barstow.
Alpine High School girls basketball sealed the 1960 61 schedule by defeating Valentine 57 43. Tai Gearhart led Valentine with 25 points while Alpine’s Aida Hernandez 19, Mary Ann Sanchez 18, and Merced Uranga 17 paced Alpine. Alpine’s guards limited Valentine’s other forwards as Alpine eyes District 4AA tourney in Alpine and Marfa.
Peter Mayer of Los Angeles, California, replying to The Avalanche, recalls visiting Alpine about two years ago when he owned nearby acreage and was impressed with the scenery and the city.
Miss Carol Vogt, selected Good Citizen of Alpine High School, received a Good Citizenship pen in a Wednesday assembly. DAR Big Bend Chapter regent Miss Sarah Miltin Hill presented the award as part of a national DAR program. Miss Vogt is active in Student Council, National Honor Society, UIL debate, PTA, and multiple school clubs, and plans to major in piano in college.
Sul Ross Speech Department under Dr Katharine Boyd presents the one act play Mrs Noah Gives the Sign by F Sladen Smith in the Little Theater at 8 p m Tuesday Feb 21 as part of Religious Emphasis Week. Nelda Almquist leads as Mrs Noah with cast including Roy Meyer Rita Christian Mary Lynn Lamberson Marion Honeycutt Julie Lacey Bill Capt Don Landers Hugh Duane Dingler. Dr Clifford Casey invites townspeople to attend and to hear guest speakers at daily assemblies in Main Auditorium 10 to 11 Monday through Thursday Feb 20 23.

Dr. E C Shortt aged around 44 died in Sao Paulo Brazil of heart failure according to a cable to Sul Ross president Dr Bryan Wildenthal. Warren W Baxley former Sul Ross librarian died in Galveston on February 2 after heart surgery and burial took place in Stephenville. He is survived by his mother Bonnie Logan Baxley of Wichita Falls.
Brewster County grand jury returned an indictment against Mrs Arthur W Clay for murder with malice in the shooting of her husband on Thanksgiving Day in Alpine on November 24 1960. Bond set at 5000 pending further proceedings.
In Marfa Tuesday night the Alpine Bucks lost the season finale 59 to 57. Nunez led Marfa with 20 points, followed by Alpine’s Wallace Peters with 20. Richardson and Ward added 11 each, Lee Anderson 9, Gary Clay 6. In the B contest Marfa won 46 to 12. This game wrapped the 1960 61 Buck basketball season.
Dandy Day owned and shown by J. P. Espy of Fort Davis was judged grand champion in the halter class for quarter horses at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition.
Shannon Oil Co. No. 1 wildcat 30 miles south of Alpine drilled to 3717 feet yesterday while Hunt No. 56 Elsinore 30 miles northeast of Alpine in Pecos County closed at 16735 feet after moving rig. Previous tests showed oil and gas. no new production updates released.
Petitions circulate in Alpine urging a dog control ordinance to be voted on April 4 alongside the U.S. Senate and city election. The measure would prohibit dogs at large, require licensing and rabies vaccination, enforce leash or penned keeping, and punish infractions. Mayor Lockhart says the vote should come from the people, highlighting benefits like increased pet security and reduced dog poisoning risks in children and local wildlife.
At the Tuesday meeting Alpine School Board approved Faye Davis to teach English in grades 6 7 and 8 at Central School and Diane Stillwell to take a leave of absence until Sept 1 1941 and a contract for 1961 62. The board also approved bills over 3 300 including utilities and sanctioned a District 4AA football game with Marfa for Nov 11.
Dr. L. M. Cline chair of UW Geology will present at 7 30 tonight in room 315 Science Building Sul Ross Campus. He researchers sedimentary features of the Ouachita Mountains Oklahoma and will compare with Flysch sedimentation in Wales Northern Carpathians Poland and the Alps. The public is invited as part of the Visiting Geoscientist Program of the American Geological Institute.
Mrs J L Mitchell mother of Mrs Paul Pierce died suddenly of a heart attack in an Austin hospital Tuesday. Burial will be in Fort Stockton at 2 p m Friday.
James L. Shoemake, born 1874 in Cotulla, died Feb 19 in Alpine after a short illness. He helped found Marathon area cattle work, jailed Brewster County, served as deputy sheriff, and was a U S Customs inspector at Ysleta Van Horn and Marathon. He left six children fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Marathon Cemetery with Alpine Masonic Lodge in charge.
Mel Parnell former Boston Red Sox star will manage the Alpine Cowboys in the 1961 season a Red Sox farm club in the professional Sophomore League. General Manager Gerald Brunelle announced the appointment noting the club will train in Florida with signed players Ronald Thompson Hatter Matt Giordano Herron Purcell Sears and Harless Jr. in spring training field personnel to be finalized after April.
For the second straight year a Rambouillet ram bred by Miles Pierce of Alpine won the junior division grand championship at the San Antonio Live Show. Jay Miller of Ozona showed the ram, also exhibitor of the prior year’s champion.
The Christian Church will hold a preaching mission from Sunday morning to Wednesday evening February 19 to 22 as part of Religious Emphasis Week at Sul Ross College. Evening services start at 7:30 except the closing 7 to 8 pm fellowship supper. A religious play at 8:15 pm by the college speech department follows the supper. Rev. Robert M. Platt, campus minister and head of the Texas Tech Christian Foundation, will speak.
W. G. Fielder resigns as justice of the peace of Precinct 1 effective February 28. Commissioners' Court will convene at 1 30 p.m. Friday February 17 to appoint a successor.
Scoutmaster Ray Baker leads Scout Troop 44 in a reorganization after months of inactivity. Boys aged 11 to 13 who have been or wish to join are invited to gather in the basement of First Baptist Church at 7 p.m. on Monday February 20.
