Harvard Radio Observatory Plans Big Additions near Fort Davis
A new $400000 radio telescope and a large laboratory building are planned for the Harvard Radio Astronomy Station near Fort Davis. Dr. Allen Maxwell says the steerable 85 foot diameter antenna will observe distant radio sources and suns with high sensitivity. Construction begins with foundations in two weeks and tower erection in April, with completion around August. The project, funded by the Geophysics Directorate and Sacramento Peak Observatory, will expand the existing facility on land donated by the Sproul Estate and extended to three more acres.

Meriwether Well Testing Continued by City Council
The Meriwether water well northeast of Alpine received continued testing approval from the City Council on Tuesday. Mayor Lockhart urged reconditioning and remodeling of the test pump and proposed trading in the 4 inch oil lubricating column and shaft and the 4 inch pump to offset costs. Councilman Winter noted Odessa and Midland drillers agreed the pump could be lowered using the city owned 4 inch column and shaft at little cost, with further discussion planned.

Crane High School’s Golden Cranes secured second place in District 4AA by beating Alpine 65 59 in the A contest and 48 38 in the B game. Top scorers were Crane’s Bobby Smith and Alpine’s Gary Clay with 18 each in A, while Crane's Gary Peck led B scoring with 13. Alpine Girls Rally To Double Victory Over Marfa
Alpine High School girls basketball defeated Marfa High in two District 44A games in Marfa. The A team won 58 39 and the B team 53 29, tying Alpine and Mc Camey for first. Aida Hernandez and Mary Ann Sanchez led with 18 points each in the A game. Rosie Adamson scored 23 in the B game, as seven Alpine players combined for 30 points to complement her. The team heads to the District 4AA tourney in Marfa February 17 18.
