Bodies of 3 Marfa youths recovered from San Esteban Lake

After a six day search involving hundreds of men and several airplanes, divers recovered the bodies of three Marfa youths Donald Nicolls Leroy Cleveland Jr and R J Stiles Jr aged 19 15 15 respectively from San Esteban Lake near Marfa Texas The youths disappeared after leaving Marfa in a car last MondayTheir bodies were found in cold water within yards of the overturned sailboat The deaths are being treated as accidental with investigators noting the jacket shirt and boots removed from Stiles during a failed attempt to disrobe His life saving training failed to save him as he struggled in the frigid water The Alpine Volunteer Fire Department aided in the search and the case was reported to police authorities statewide on Tuesday morning as the families urged help Continued on last page

Lott and Kilmer Inspect Parks Road Toward State Takeover

G Lott division engineer and R E Kilmer completed an inspection of the road from Marathon to Chisos park. They sent a report to state highway engineer Gib Gilchrist. The state may take over maintenance, creating two permanent camps and employing twelve to fourteen men, with annual costs rising from about 12000 to 15000 dollars.

Natural Resources of Texas to Be Shown at Centennial Exposition

The Texas Centennial in Dallas will feature an extensive natural resources display from June 6. Jurors Summoned for February District Court Term

Jurors have been summoned for the February term of district court to convene next Monday. The docket includes the murder case of Jose, Gabino and George Tucar, indicted last August for the killing of Benito Cobos near Alpine, with the Tucars out on bond. New Texas Theatre Planned in Alpine by March First

Senior B F Berkeley announced a new picture theatre will open in Alpine around March 1, leasing the former Mojave building to Sol J Davidson of San Antonio. The venue will be named the Texas with few further details released.

Howling Winds And Freezing Weather On Program This Week

Freezing temperatures and two days of howling west winds marked the week. Temperatures reached 24 above zero early Monday, then moderated with no ice reported since. A strong west wind persisted through Tuesday night and Wednesday, with dust and sand clouds and forecasts of colder weather. A Bostonian playing bridge on a verandah swung at a passing beef and felled his partner, or so he recalls.

Valentine Wins In Senior Cage Play In Sul Ross Gym

In a tight Sul Ross gym contest last Saturday Valentine captured the senior boys championship by edging Alpine Junior High 20 to 18. Marathon juniors topped Langtry for the junior title while Marathon seniors beat Langtry for the consolation. Alpine Junior High juniors defeated Valentine juniors 18 to 5 in junior consolation. Senior and junior squads from Valentine Langtry Marathon and Alpine entered the event with postgame selections naming McKinney and others to the seniors first team.

Right of Way Warrant Issue to Be Decided at Meet

Fort Davis, Feb. 12. The meeting will decide the right of way warrant issue set for the 29th. A ranch restocking move tops local cattle news as Mrs. Violet McIvor of Concord New Hampshire and Mrs. D. G. Melver expand the U up and Down ranch holdings in Jeff Davis county after lease expiration. The Melvers plan to raise cattle, employing W Grubb of Fort Davis to manage. Buyers include Vivian McAdoo of Sierra Blanca and J. W. Merrill & Son, with cattle from Geo Jones Frank Jones and Mrs Childers.

Contract Awarded For Drilling New Water Well Here

H Storey of Alpine was awarded for drilling a water well at a special city commission meeting Tuesday evening. The well will augment the city supply and be located on South Hill near the Boy Scout club house. The water system was at full capacity last summer and the city hopes to have the project completed before the heavy water-using period begins.

Indian Graves Found on Davis Mountains Ranch near Toyahvale

Fort Davis reports Indian burial found this week on the Joe Kingston place near Toyahvale. Bones and arrowheads were unearthed along with artifacts near Phantom Lake, a longtime camping ground. Participants included Joe Kingston Duncan Kingston Mr and Mrs Kelly and Lowell Humphreys.
