Fire losses in 1953 fell under 500 dollars per Alpine, cited by Fire Chief J C Cooley as a strong record for a town of its size. Chief Cooley expects the 25 percent good record credit to continue. Volunteers answered 13 alarms, used 475 gallons of water, laid 450 feet of hose, and logged 88 man hours fighting fires.
Alpine High School FFA members exhibited livestock at the El Paso show this week. Names include Alan Turner David Burleson Alfredo Moreno Vaughn Musgrave Arthur Lesko Joe Ramos Bobby Clanton Robi Maxwell and Aaron Jacoby VA instructor. Brewster Jeff Davis 4-H also attended led by Frank Newsom county agent. Official results list several placings among calves and 4-H entries.
Gordon Bennett vice-president of McMurry College Abilene met with the official board of the Methodist church here Monday night to discuss college interests.
Funeral services were held at the Livingston Funeral Home Chapel Thursday at 3 30 p m for Mrs. John W. Harmon 83 born Amanda Elizabeth Irby near Fort Smith Arkansas November 7 1870 married to John W Harmon in Denton County Texas in 1890 moved to Alpine soon after he ranching there until a few years before his death in 1945. Interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were Alpine men M L Hopson Sherman Newsom L B Willeford Roscoe Morgan Wallace Sublett and Tom Yarbro Marathon. Survived by four sons Charles Uvalde Joe Marfa Irby El Paso Clay San Antonio two daughters Mrs W B Dorris Sr Alpine and Mrs C A Dorris Richmond California fifteen grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren and two sisters Mrs Jimmy Soule Duncan Arizona and Mrs Aliee Payne Haskell.
William Thomson assistant professor of music at Sul Ross College was named judge of the 1954 Texas Student Composers contest sponsored by the Texas Federation of Music Clubs open to Texas college and university students under 26. Competition closes February 14. Thomson is known for Western Star and other works presented across the United States. He won first in Texas Ve Composers contest in 1947 and national Young Composers contest in 1947 and placed second in 1951.
Alpha Chi delegates from 33 colleges plan a Big Bend National Park trip on February 20 as part of the Sul Ross meeting activities. The Texas Chi chapter at Alpine hosts the national scholarship group with Dr Dorothy Dee Bailey of Sul Ross announcing the schedule. The event starts February 19 with a 1 30 pm gathering in the Little Theatre and a 6 30 pm Holland Hotel dinner.
A Buick sedan reported stolen in Belle Fourche South Dakota February 1 was recovered last week by Highway Patrolman M W Miles and Robi L Johnson is jailed on theft charges. Johnson waived extradition and awaits return to the state to face charges. Mr and Mrs Arthur Blucher were weekend visitors in El Paso.
The Texas Good Neighbor Commission unanimously endorses creating an International Peace Park by merging Big Bend National Park with adjacent areas in Coahuila and Chihuahua. The Alpine chamber of commerce leads the effort, with Neville Penrose naming a subcommittee led by Dorrance D. Roderick to advance the proposal.
Alpine FFA chapter showed a second place group of 15 lambs from one county at the Houston Fat Stock Show. Members included Jim Turner Gilbert Ramos Robert Maxwell Nelson Guthrie Shirley Killion James Thomas Joe Brooks Alan Turner Gary Henderson David Burleson John Haglund Eddy Fowlkes Marion Brooks Bobby Chavarria Don Davis Jeryl Walker. Ten of the top 40 lambs in the fine wool group were shown by Alpine FFA members David Ramos Raul Molinar John Haglund James Thomas Bobby Chavarria Jim Turner Gilbert Ramos. Aaron Jacoby of Alpine High School supervised and accompanied the group to Houston.
Alpine High School band directed by E Joe Lee joined 13 guest bands at Del Rio Band festival. Judges included Dr Bill Wendtland Douglas Fry and Charles Nickel. After a parade 12 Alpine musicians earned spots in a 140 piece All Star Band led by noted directors.
Westminster Choir visits Sul Ross auditorium sponsored by Alpine High School A Cappella choir on Saturday February 13. Critics from New York praise the choir for unity of tone and dynamic range under conductor Dr John Finley Williamson with extolled notes from Downes Thompson and Perkins. Alpine area claims unusually high former members ratio to the chorus with two living ex members remaining locally.
Miles Pierce, Rambouillet breeder from Rambouillet, won grand champion ram and grand champion ewe at the Houston show this week. His entries also captured the Metalcraft Rambouillet ram trophy and additional top awards in major state shows last year.
Jurors are summoned for the 83rd district court term to convene next Monday at 10 a.m. Grand jurors include C. B. Casey and Miles Pierce among others. petit jurors list Emilio Salmon and Peter Koch among many names. A suit contesting the will of the late R. W. Smith of Alpine is set for Monday with other cases likely to be heard.
M P Slover reports Alpine Independent School District has 1162 school age children for 1954 55 up from 1146 last year. Latin American students total 684 Anglo American 471, with overall increases. Officials stress accurate tallies to maximize per pupil state funding and payroll apportionment.
The city will drill a new water well on the John F Lane ranch on the town’s south edge following an agreement with Mr Lane. The city will pay 5e per 1000 gallons used with a 100 gallons per minute minimum. If the well fails to meet this minimum the city may reject it. Mayor Gillett said the setup includes automatic pump controls arriving soon to boost supply.
About 30 Alpine residents answered Capt. An sloan’s plea from Pusan to aid 145 orphans in a Korean shelter. The 91st Military Police Battalion unit sponsors the home and much improvement came from officers and soldiers and Alpine donors. Capt Ansloan thanks Alpine residents through The Avalanche for their across the sea generosity.
Texas Highway Department invites bids for 7 765 miles of grades structures flexible base and asphalt paving on U S Highway 90 from 56 miles west of Moreta to 50 miles east of Dryden. Work to begin this spring. Final Sanderson to Dryden segment will boost all weather travel for Terrell County residents and border tourists.
The Alpine Bucks topped Fort Stockton 83 50 to clinch their second straight district title in District 7AA. Duane Smith led with 19 points, Dickie Allen 18, and Raul Molinar sparked early scoring. Alpine also defeated Monahans 51 34 in a later district game while Alpine B’s beat Fort Stockton 49 25. The next district game was set for Marfa with bi district location undecided.
Enrollment for the Spring semester at Sul Ross College rose by over 200 from the previous year with a total of 627 students, up from 423. The breakdown lists Freshmen 209, Sophomores 126, Juniors 95, Seniors 104, Graduates 87. males 370 versus females 251.
Thirteen members of Alpine Commandery Knights Templar conferred the Temple Degree for the Pecos commandery at a Pecos gathering last Thursday night. Attendees included L. D.
