Brewster County reports a March of Dimes total of 2212.44 led by Alpine Mothers’ March at 586 and Marathon event at 95.87. Marathon Marathon’s total 283 excludes mailed gifts. Big Bend Park 78.01 from donations and a dance. Pupils' tea raised 47.52. piano student Keith Peters a polio patient showed progress. Alpine and Marathon service stations gave 105. coffee days raised 131 325. VFW dance proceeds 25. basketball game Alpine Pecos 33.39. pledges 222.05 not yet collected. Alpine High aims for a fourth District 7AA win as they host Crane 5 in Alpine Gym tonight. In recent games the Bucks beat Crane 57 55 in Crane last Friday and edged Monahans 76 61, with Jack Burgess scoring 14 and Jimmy Matlock 18 against Crane. Doyle Watkins led Monahans with 24 as Alpine trailed early before a strong surge in the third. The B squad game precedes the A contest at 6:30, opening the second half of the district round robin.
Sul Ross State University Coach Al Milstead announces a 10 game 1955 Lobos football schedule with a Thanksgiving Day home game at 2 p.m. Most games are night contests. The slate includes Corpus Christi A at Alpine, McMurry at Alpine, Sam Houston State at Huntsville, Southwest Texas at Alpine, Texas A&I at Kingsville, Texas Lutheran at Alpine, S F Austin at Alpine, Howard Payne at Brownwood, Lamar Tech at Beaumont, and East Texas at Alpine in Lone Star Conference play.
Hundreds attend the Sunday dedication and open house for the New Alpine Community Center. Architect A V Benner presents keys to Mrs. George Baines, who passes them to Mrs. Mabel Hamilton. Music by the Alpine String Ensemble and a benediction by Dr C B Casey highlight a brief ceremony.
Alpine High School band directed by E Joe Lee leaves at 10 30 a m for Del Rio for a two day clinic with 19 bands from San Felipe Brady Pecos Kerrville Mason Bandera Coleman Cross Plains and Del Rio. A street parade and all star concert are planned with trophies awarded by Supt Tanksley. The group travels by school bus and returns Saturday night.
The county tax collector's office started issuing 1955 motor vehicle plates on Tuesday with County Surveyor J.T. Carney Jr. receiving the first passenger tag BN.3900. By Wednesday afternoon 30 licenses had been issued: 16 passenger, 4 commercial, 5 farm, 2 trailers, and 3 dealers. The plates can be attached immediately with April 1 as the deadline.
Rambouillet sheep shown by Miles Pierce of Alpine swept all top prizes at the Southwestern Livestock Show in Fort Worth. Pierce claimed grand champion ram, grand champion ewe, reserve champion ewe, and earned permanent possession of the Golden Bell trophy as the only three time winner. The Fort Worth event was described as the toughest in four years.
Sul Ross Lobos travel to Abilene for two Lone Star Conference games against McMurry College after dropping two home tilts to SFA. C L Nix scored 36 in the opener and 21 in the second. C J Hansen led Lobos with 21. Lewallen 16 in the Tuesday game. Pearson 14 and Blackburn 13.
Miss Frances Sowell of Austin was named camp director of Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp at a meeting of directors and local chairmen of the Permian Basin Area Council in Odessa. Mrs Lenna M Sawyer was retained as executive director and the next council meeting will be at Mitre Peak Camp in April or May.
Architectural firm Davis and Foster of El Paso unveiled preliminary plans for Brewster County Hospital a 400000 project. The L-shaped single story building would span about 18000 square feet with central refrigeration air conditioning and central heating. Doctors and County Judge Felix McGaughy endorsed the plan and urged further minor refinements to ensure efficiency safety and cost effectiveness for taxpayers.
Sul Ross State College reports nearly 700 students enrolled for the spring semester or about 43 juniors and seniors among 700 new and returning students. Classes began January 27 with exams and breaks scheduled around Easter from April 7 to 11. The Big Bend Sportsmen's Club meets elected officers including Chief Joyce Jack Johnson as president and discussed a firearms safety course during Boys and Its Week.
Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church for Gilberto Natera 2% of Alpine who died in a highway crash on U S Highway 67 south of Marfa last Saturday at 5 p m. The car driven by Eracilo Balero Espinosa of Alpine turned over. Espinosa was hurt but not critically. Charges of negligent homicide were filed against Espinosa in Presidio County. Natera leaves a wife and three children Alicia 5 Silvia 3 and Gilberto Jr 15 months, his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. He moved to Alpine in 1929 and served in World War II.
Ramos VNW Post 7207 hosts district commander W G Ray of Midland Saturday. Mrs Ray will accompany her husband and meet with the Ladies Auxiliary. The post just hit 100 percent of its state quota and leads the district in transmittals. A couples dance at the VFW home Saturday night for members only.
Smith Furniture Co. was named exclusive representative for the Hotpoint line in the Alpine trade territory this week. E. Milton Smith announced 1955 as Hotpoint’s golden anniversary, noting improved appliance quality and reduced prices. The dealership offers heaters, automatic washers and dryers, air conditioners, and dishwashers.
Big Bend Stock Show steers will be exhibited in El Paso February 9 to 13, said County Agent Frank Newsom. Top placers include Martha Gearhart and Martha Ann from Alpine, with multiple Rocky Mountain region participants and Joe Ramos Jr. showing three baby beeves and two lambs in El Paso.
Grossman and his mother Mrs. M F Grossman of Denver Colorado are in Study Butte to spend several weeks soaking up sunshine of the Big Bend The visitor first came in 1943 44 and now returns whenever possible to the area.
Brewster County announced 1131 poll tax receipts issued up to the final deadline. The tally is about 400 fewer than the 1554 receipts recorded at the same point last year during the primary elections, per the tax collector's office.
Gordine Barrow arrived home from 18 months of service in Japan on a six week furlough before reporting to Lackland AFB San Antonio. He is a teletype communications technician in the Air Force. His wife Dolores Markham of Alpine is attending Sul Ross College.
