Brewster County Court Term Opens Monday

Brewster County Court will open Monday February 6 with Judge Felix McGaughy aiming to set all criminal and civil cases for trial. He said he is able to try all pending cases to clear the docket.

1522 Poll Tax Receipts Issued in Brewster County

Brewster County tax office reports 8 of 197e poll tax receipts issued this week. 1481 paid, 41 exemptions, 4 to youths turning 21. Last year 1146 paid, 10 exemptions. Overage voters need no exemption. This year’s total far below the 2000 plus issued in 1948 despite a general election year.

Sul Ross Freshman Judging Team Wins Fort Worth Cattle Contest

Sul Ross State College freshman livestock judging team won first in the beef cattle contest at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. Members Alan Cotter Don Lee Smith Arthur Meixner and Jimmy Talbot were guided by coach A J Bierschwabe. The team totaled 1808 points, besting Cameron State of Lawton Okla and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Team members ranked high individually with Meixner 441 of 450 and Smith 580 total. Eleven colleges competed in Texas and Oklahoma.

Fire Trucks Move Into Alpine New Station at 8th Street

Alpine’s fire department moved into a new one story station at the corner of 8th Street and Avenue D. Built by J. E. Gray Jr. of Alpine for 11 450.19, the building houses four trucks including a 600 gallon Sea Raves pumper and a 500 gallon GMC combination pumper. Fire Chief J. C. Cooley announced plans for a Granada Theatre Cash Night benefiting Brewster County Hospital. Court actions against Fred Jack involve Cash Night and theatre lotteries. The city will pave Eighth Street from Holland Avenue to Avenue D, with property owners paying their share. The old lean-to at Welland and 8th will be removed and a creek bridge funded by J. Casner was donated about a decade ago. Chief Cooley noted the GMC pumper cost 7500 when bought, now valued at 12 000.

Doctors To Meet With Equipment Men Monday

Alpine doctors and designers of tal will meet at 1 p.m. Monday in County Judge Felix McGaughy's Dice to discuss equipment for the new institution. Ralph Davis of El Paso, architect, will accompany into Alpine by several medical equipment suppliers. The amount of equipment purchased will determine building funds. total cost not to exceed 400000 dollars, though several memorial gifts for furnishing rooms have been received.

Kokernot Aids City Water Drill To 2300 Feet

Kokernot Jr a noted local rancher funds city water project, donating 2500 dollars to deepen the Riess test well toward 2300 feet. He also buys the ball park well for 5000 dollars, with Mayor Hugh White noting the city may repurpose the large pump. Paul Gooden will ream the hole to ten inches and set 800 feet of eight inch casing as the effort aims to reach a viable deep water test.

Brewster County Auto License Tags On Sale

New motor vehicle licenses went on sale at the Brewster County tax collector's office on Wednesday February 1. Through yesterday morning a total of 25 licenses had been issued. Passenger plates in Brewster County begin with BR-37. The plates are black with yellow lettering.

Wrights Present Organ To St James Church

Mr and Mrs Joel Wright presented St James Episcopal Church with a new Mammond organ announced by Ven Robert Davis rector. The organ is the largest model from the company and is expected to be installed within a week or ten days. The new church building will be dedicated on April 22 by Bishop James Kinsolving.

Dale Carnegie Course Demonstration Planned

A Dale Carnegie course demonstration will be held at 30 p.m. Tuesday Feb 7 in the Community Center with public invitation. H Edward Fee of El Paso will lead the session and also conduct the course in Alpine, sponsored by the Rotary Club.
