Mrs Earl Meeks of Marathon receives an Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters for her brother Donnie B Parker a bomber crew member stationed in England and prisoner of the Germans since April 27 1944 after being shot down over France Parker had 32 missions from October 1943 to April 1944 His siblings Lonnie in India Delbert in New Guinea and David in the Maritime Service serve abroad in the war effort.
Sgt Eugene Beall arrived on a thirty day furlough to visit relatives after injuries from a plane crash in China. The tail gunner served nine months overseas in the China-Burma-India theatre and will report to a California hospital for an operation after his respite. He and his wife traveled to Santa Fe New Mexico to visit his sister.
The Men’s Fellowship will meet at the Presbyterian church next Tuesday evening February 13 at 7 30. Tickets cost 50 cents for old members while new members attend as guests to support the new truck. Members to report Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock to learn the operation of the new equipment.
Fire Chief J C Cooley announced a $6500 new fire truck arrives today. Jerome Schwab from the State Fire Insurance Commission and Burke & Sims of San Antonio helped furnish the equipment. The 300 gallon unit will serve Alpine and county grass fires, replacing the Sea graves pumper for city use. It will be housed temporarily at Hord Motor Co until a new fire station is built. The funds came from Brewster county citizens and $300 from the Volunteer Fire department.
R M Bankhead resigns after seven years as Alpine schools superintendent. He will leave July 1 with no definite plans and cites 27 years in teaching as ample. He praises cooperation from patrons and board and urges a younger successor, noting no shortage of qualified leaders.
Mrs Eugenia Rowland received the Presidential citation for the Marine unit of her son Pte B D Rowland. He earned the Purple Heart posthumously for a July on Tinian while on mopping up operations. He was a 194? Alpine High School graduate and played sports. sister Sgt Janie Lee Rowland serves in the WAC in Alaska.
The War Production Board announces a temporary ration holiday allowing sale of odd lot men’s and women’s shoes without stamps. The policy aims to help consumers gain extra mileage and help dealers clear stock. Prices must be at least 25 percent below regular, aiding liquidation of unsuitable assortments.
BM2C Dever Lee Applewhite of the Salt Lake City crew writes to Alpine sisters about a Christmas bombardment of a Japanese island near Tokyo. He notes joint Navy and Army action with B-24s and P-38 fighters, describing coastal guns, fuel dumps, ships, and planes hit in an hour of firing. Applewhite says two destroyers sank a Japanese destroyer, a large landing ship was destroyed, and Christmas Eve headaches lingered for the Japs. He reflects on three years in the Pacific and hopes for a large Christmas reunion home.
Mr and Mrs A B Stirman received the Purple Heart for their son S Sgt Elton H Stirman who died Aug 22 from wounds in action in the European theater He served with an infantry unit of the Texas Oklahoma division went overseas in March last year He is a brother of Mrs R T Key of Alpine Before entering the armed forces he was employed as a cowboy on various ranches in this section
Weather report for the week beginning Thursday February 1 and ending Wednesday February 7 from the Weather Bureau at Sul Ross College lists a minimum of 32 degrees on Monday and Wednesday and a maximum of 72 on Saturday. County officials Judge R B Slight and Commissioners H C Hernandes Earl Clark and Ray Ogle departed yesterday for Austin on official business.

Air field personnel may earn college credit through Sul Ross College night classes. Courses include Conversational Spanish typing shorthand marketing physics photography meteorology and education. Two class periods weekly with a $7.50 fee for three credits and $2 for each additional credit. Extension courses are available via the U S Armed Forces Institute.

Southern Pacific announced the Pecos River bridge is open to traffic. The new symmetrical cantilever span, 1,3966 feet long, stands on six reinforced concrete piers with a water-to-rail height of 21.6 feet, one of the nation's highest. Line changes of 0.5 miles on adjacent approaches reduce curvature.
