Mrs. W B Dorris recalls her son W B Jr Billy who served on the USS Monaghan and died with the ship after a typhoon near Leyte. Billy’s June 24 1943 letter describing Navy life and devotion to the ship is excerpted and offered to the Monaghan and fallen crew. The first annual Big Bend 4 H and PPA Livestock Show will be held in Alpine on February 27 with 120 fat lambs and 12 baby calf entries competing for 200 in prizes. Local sponsors support Brewster and Jeff Davis counties. 4 H club and FFA youths from both counties join in the event. Judging starts at 10 a.m. lambs by E G Cauble Jr and Woodrow Munn, calves at 1 20 p m by A J Blerschwale. Showmanship prizes awarded, local auction at 2 30 p m by Walter Britten. Unsold animals go to San Angelo and El Paso shows. Sales committee led by H L Kokernot Jr includes Otis Kimball and many ranchmen and businessmen.

Mrs Freda Gibson Powell of Alpine has been appointed associate professor of speech at Sul Ross College during Miss Annie Kate Ferguson's spring leave. Powell, a Sul Ross graduate, will reside in Alpine while her husband serves with an Army Air Force combat camera unit in the China Burma India theater.

Alpine Bucks Suffer Big Loss to Marfa High in Rivalry Trip
After beating Fort Davis 33 Friday, Alpine Bucks were routed by Marfa High in the neighboring city Wednesday. Marfa sought revenge after a prior close game led by Franco and supported by Senter Uranga and Marr. Marfa B team defeated Alpine 26-9, while the elder brothers were felled 66-23. The Bucks travel to Rankin tonight and then face Marfa again next Tuesday, with Sanderson hosting next Friday.

New Auto License Plates Arrive for Brewster County
Brewster county's motor vehicle license plates have arrived and will go on sale this weekend at the courthouse. The 1942 plates will be discarded, with the new 1948 issue replacing them for another year starting April 1. Plates are smaller, now a single plate per vehicle, with black numerals on gold and a new four-digit numbering system preceded by two letters. Passenger plates start AT-450 to AT-1849, farm BB-1200 to BB-1399, truck MC-1150 to MC-1499, and trailer TB-740 to TB-4830. attachments allowed from March 1, with April 1 as the final date.

Pecos County Livestock Show Set For Feb 23 24
FORT STOCKTON The sixth annual Pecos county Livestock show will be held Feb 23-24. It aims to attract the largest number of registered sheep breeders at any spring show in the United States. Five stock classes will be shown with 4 H club members displaying beef calves fat lambs and registered sheep. Adult breeders enter registered sheep and range rams. About 250 registered sheep are being fitted by adults and 75 by 4 H members. Eight calves and 160 fat lambs are being fed in preparation. Prizes awarded include first second and third for beet calves and ribbons for ewes and rams. In adult breeders show five ribbons per competition. Champions and grand champions will receive substantial awards.

J H Fletcher Former Alpine Resident Dies
John Harvey Fletcher 69 died suddenly January 18 at his Valentine home. Funeral services were held January 19 in Sanderson with Elvin Best officiating. Interment was in Cedar Grove cemetery. He was a pump repair foreman for the T and N O railway, previously lived in Alpine and Belton areas, and is survived by a widow, two sons, five daughters, twelve grandchildren, a brother, two half brothers, and a sister.
