Eddie Popowski named new field manager of the Alpine Cowboys and eyes the 1959 season with young prospects. Boston Red Sox top brass praised his leadership while Allentown officials lamented losing him. Poll Taxes Sold in Brewster County Total 1096

Chief Deputy Heil reports 1096 poll taxes were sold and 16 exemptions issued before the deadline Saturday night January 31. The figures compare with 1392 taxes and 25 exemptions in 1957 and 1431 taxes in 1956, showing a drop from prior years.

Mrs. Mary L. Miller of Bi Bend National Park was among top national winners in Family Circle magazine’s Supermarket Symbol of America contest for writing about Safe Way Store in Alpine. Translator Switch Disrupts Odessa Broadcast

Odessa station KOSA went off air for over five hours as a transmitter melt disrupted service. The translator atop Twin Peaks switched from KOSA to Midland MID-TV and then returned when Odessa resumed broadcasting.

Lime Brews Gas Show At Humble No. 1 Stone Wildcat

The Humble Oil Co. drill No. 1 Stone in Pecos County reported a gas seeps during a test that reached 5200 to 5266 feet. The 1.5 hour test covered 15 feet of mud before setting 5256 feet for an intermediate casing. Standard Oil of Texas filed a similar 3000 foot rotary wildcat 16 miles south of Balmorhea, No. 1 H. C. Espy, location 21-357 David Wright. The Brewster County site remains the only active wildcat, with Texas New Mexico 1468 drilling lime at 588 feet, northeast of Alpine on the old A. D. Neal Ranch.

Ice Storm Freezes Alpine Area Roads After Thaw

A severe ice storm followed by dry cold winds froze Alpine roads. Maintenance crews under N C Miller salted and cleared highways, easing travel after a Sunday accident near Sul Ross State College. Long distance lines were out Monday with only minor damage reported in Alpine.
