Big Bend Stock Show Draws Record Crowd at Fort Bend Wool
The 22nd Annual Big Bend Livestock Show at the Big Bend Wool and Mohair on Jan 28 and 29 drew a record crowd. Jim Espy Jr of Fort Davis won first and grand champion with his unnamed colt bred by his father, Jim Espy. Second went to Jimmy Jones with Hygen bred by Jesse Jones of Alpine. Cindy Hill placed third with Leo Bill bred by B G Hill of Alpine. Other winners include Joe Tom Lane with Jack McCue IV bred by Joe T Lane and Andy Prude with Dudes Change bred by John Robert Prude of Fort Davis. Filly Colt class saw Jim Espy Jr again champion with a colt bred by his father. Jack D. Shely earned reserve with Anna Day bred by Espy.

Death Takes Mrs. Weston
Mrs. O. D. Weston, 87, died Monday in Trinidad Colorado after a long illness. She and her husband built a ranching empire in Trinidad after moving from West Texas in 1946. Born Maude Cook in Erath County, she married O. D. Weston in Mills County on May 12 1901. Funeral held in Trinidad Tuesday. Survivors include her husband three sons Forest Weston Alpine Elmo Weston Van Horn and Bob Weston Walsenburg six grandchildren nine great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Attending from Alpine were Forest Weston and Mr and Mrs Billie Weston.

Welfare Office Opens March 1 in Alpine
Alpine to welcome a Child Welfare Family Counselor office on March 1 marking a Brewster County service expansion. Lobos Host Two Conference Basketball Games This Week
The Sul Ross Lobos prepare for two Lone Star Conference home games against McMurry and East Texas State, both at 7 30 p m. New Mexico Western beat Sul Ross 58 52 at Silver City with Fryman 26 Slape 20 Thompson 15 leading the Lobos. Sul Ross defeated Texas A I 112 89 the prior Monday snapping an 11 game skid. Fryman 31 Sparkman 25 Slape 23 led Sul Ross in scoring.

Poll Tax Sales Reported by Brewster County Office
The Brewster County tax office announced the sale of 1 543 poll taxes and 62 exemptions for 21 year olds as certificates deadline ended. Last year issued were 1 030 poll taxes and 24 exemptions with 1964 leading to 1 802 poll taxes and 111 exemptions plus 21 used federally.

More than 180 attended the Alpine Chamber of Commerce annual membership banquet at Sul Ross College dining hall where A. C. Cullen Aikins urged residents to sell Alpine and uphold traditional morals. New officers include Marvin Pierce as president, Verdis Pack as vice president, and Phil Wayne Ebensberger as secretary treasurer, with four new directors named. Awards went to Peter Koch for service as chamber manager and to retiring president Don Newbury. Out of town guest Pat Ryan of the Marfa Chamber attended.
