New taxes toughest job of Legislature
Frantic preparations for the 62nd Texas Legislature begin January 12 as renovations at the State Capitol continue and staff and offices are readied. Budgets, redistricting, and major bills loom, with revenue estimates from 645.1 million up to 800 million or more. Inauguration events for Gov. Preston Smith and Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes are set for January 19 including a $15 couple admission for the main ball and several free events.
