Auto crash claims its second victim in Alpine area
B L Pat O Briant 26 died last Thursday after an auto wreck on West Main Avenue Sunday afternoon December 19. He never regained consciousness and was buried in Lubbock. The other fatality was W B Justice 2 who died the same night in the collision. Justice was in a car driven by Mrs Justice who was critically hurt with a broken arm. O Briant had lived in Alpine three years and worked as a salesman for Dunnegan Sales Co Odessa distributors of beverages in the area.

Alpine Man Home After 10 Months With Invasion Forces
Anton Hess a Navy Seabee, returned on a 30 day furlough after nearly ten months in North Africa. He says his unit helped build a base and install water systems after the initial invasion, and that the front has quieted. Hess expects to be sent to another front upon returning to duty. His pre war work was in well drilling locally. Mr and Mrs Clay Holland returned from Florida visiting their son Capt John Holland stationed in Donellon.

Major E. K. Hendricks Infantry assumes command of WAC Branch Number 7 AAS replacing Lt. Col. Arnold transferred to headquarters Eighth Service Command Dallas. Born in Riceville Iowa he lived there while earning degrees at Culver Military Academy and University of Iowa. Precipitation in Alpine Last Thursday Night Totals 0.41 Inches
Snow sleet and rain covered the Big Bend Davis mountains area last Thursday night totaling 0.41 inches per government gauge at Sul Ross College. The deepest snow was one inch, melted quickly as clear weather followed. Temperatures plunged to 22 degrees, unofficial town readings were 4 to 5 degrees lower. The moisture raised the month to 0.85 inches and the 1943 total to 11.49 inches, about five inches shy of 1942. Prospects for next year are described as best in years as four months of moisture boosted soil conditions.

Promotion for Officer Beats the Stork

Sanderson Girl Dies in Fort Davis Holiday Tragedy
Miss Anita Hernandez 20 of Sanderson was found dead Christmas morning in a gas filled Fort Davis servant's quarters room. The two stove jets were found open. Inquest ruled death by own action. Hernandez, daughter of Mrs Reyes Hernandez, had worked for Mr and Mrs Williams and had pleaded to accompany them for Christmas. Body sent to Sanderson for services and interment.
