Big Bend park features and geology field trip planned

Ocotillo specimens and Santa Elena Canyon scenes from Big Bend are highlighted in Life magazine photography. A geology field trip to Marathon Uplift in Brewster County is planned for April 15 and 16 with Alpine as center, to study rock exposures and potential regional development. Hal Burnett Active Installing Grand Officer in Texas

Hal Burnett of Alpine will install grand officers for ten Texas Commanderies in January. He is grand generalissimo of the Texas Commandery of Knights Templar, assisted by Litt S. Perry of Abilene as deputy grand commander and installing grand marshal. The next installations run Jan 2 to Jan 13 in multiple cities including Sweetwater Snyder Abilene San Angelo Austin Big Spring Borger Odessa Midland and McKinney.

Five Area Students Named to Who's Who Among Students

Five area high school graduates including Zarlene Anderau Tommy Gerson Frequiel Rivera Faith Smith and Charles Tuck have been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities at Sul Ross State College Alpine Marathon Alpine and surrounding areas. The selections honor exceptional achievement scholarship participation leadership and service with promise of future usefulness.

Collegiate Research Conference Held at Texas A E M University

About eighty eight students and faculty from fifteen Texas colleges attended a two day Collegiate Research Conference at Texas A E M University on December 16 and 17. Sul Ross State College was represented by James E. Scudday Otis L. Henson Harley Merritt G Ray Elder and Samuel Watson Sikes. The conference aims to encourage science trained students to pursue graduate study after completing their bachelor’s degrees.

Hudgins Heads Alpine C of G

Homer Hudgins, manager of West Texas Utilities Co, named president of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce for 1964. Jack Frost and Ed Foley will serve as vice president and treasurer. Directors for three years include Jack Williams, Marvel Pierce, Ray Morrow, and Tir Francois. The group will install at the annual membership banquet on January 20.

Silver Dollar Prizes In Alpine Christmas Draw

The Retail Merchants Committee of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce awarded prizes for the Silver Dollar Christmas event. Winners include Aida Bermudez for $100 J Ky Lange for $25 Linas and Rose for $15 and Mrs Fred Duma of Marfa for $10. Nearly 20 000 free ticket entries were issued by 38 Alpine merchants. The public drawing occurred across from the City Ma on Saturday December 21. Directors overseeing the drawing were Bob Strom E Foley Don Geeslin and Pat Forchheimer.

Wynne Rites Held Monday

Funeral services for Eugene Wynne 51 ranchman longtime resident were held at 3 p m Monday at First Methodist Church with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. He was killed in an automobile accident at the Pecos River bridge at the Pecos Crockett County line. He was born October 21 1912 in Roswell New Mexico and moved here from Grand Falls. Survived by his wife Willie Mae Gulley three daughters and three sons plus a brother. Active and honorary pallbearers named.

Steve Gunn Honored on All District 1-4A Football Squad

Steve Gunn of Burges High School in El Paso earned a spot on the All District 1-4A football team. The 180-pound senior started at right guard and was praised for opening holes for the Mustang offense and anchoring Burges’ line under coach Allan.
