Geeslin Leads Alpine March of Dimes Drive

Don Geeslin was named local campaign director for the 1964 Alpine March of Dimes drive. Avora Owens, Brewster County chapter chair, announced the campaign along with community leaders and volunteers including Harlan Ford, David Teplicek, Allan Schonberg, Al Sanchez, the Alpine Women’s Club, and Rev Clyde Chesnutt.

School Holds City Vote After Alpine High Election

The city election was held at Alpine High School on December 17. Donna Mueller won the mayoral seat with Lea Skelton and Elisa Espinosa as council members. Faculty sponsors include Harlan Ford Flora Sutton and Jack Williams and Higinio Pena. George Mills became chairman of the Big Bend Soil Conservation District board, with Caven Woodward named secretary for 1964.

Reporter Named For Court In Snyder To Take Post

Ketemeuaughin of Snyder will become court reporter for District Judge C. E. Patterson in the Sad District on Jan 1 1964. He succeeds Mrs. M L Hopson who resigned to devote full time to Trans Pecos Abstract Co and Hopson Insurance Co. Mr McLaughlin and his wife have four children Dannie Lisa Jana and Bobbi Sue They will reside in Alpine. They are Methodists. Mr McLaughlin has served as reporter for the 132nd District Court at Snyder for 18 months.

Alpine Churches Plan Special Yule Programs

Alpine churches announce Christmas week programs. Firs Baptist Church offers a 7 p.m. Dec 22 program with three children’s choirs and the adult choir under Miss Willa Dale Hilbrich. First Methodist hosts a 6 p.m. Dec 22 family supper and tree with Santa Claus visit. First Presbyterian presents a 7 p.m. candlelight service followed by a youth hayride and refreshments. A Christmas Eve call service at 11 p.m. and special music by Glenn Davis are planned. Nazarene Church schedules a 11 a.m. Dec 25 children’s program and 7 p.m. Christmas Eve service. James Episcopal Church has Christmas Eve organ carols from 9 to 11 p.m. St James Episcopal offers Holy Communion at 11 a.m. Christmas Day with Rev. James Kirkpatrick officiating. Our Lady of Peace hosts a midnight mass at 12 a.m. Christmas Eve, with carols at 11:30 p.m. Christmas Day masses at 7:10, 8:30, and 11:30 a.m., and 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel.

Sul Ross College fusion proposal faces uphill committee hurdles

Supporters in Alpine and Sul Ross State College doubt State Sen. George Parkhouse of Dallas can push a bill to combine Sul Ross with the San Angelo four year institution. They note the bill must pass multiple committee and chamber stages and gain the governor’s approval.

Avalanche to be issued day earlier over Christmas period

The Avalanche will publish one day early for two weeks as Christmas and New Year fall on Wednesday. The Christmas edition dated December 26 will be printed December 24, and the January 2, 1964 edition will be printed December 31. Ads and copy for the next issue must be received by Tuesday.
