Study of Big Bend Area To Be Made By A M Wildlife Dept
A Big Bend ecological survey approved by the State Board of Control will be conducted by Texas A&M University Wildlife Management. Dr. W B Davis says the project begins early 1955 and is a joint effort with the National Park Service Texas Game and Fish Commission and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Charles Wallmo will lead field work, and 25 desert bighorn sheep from Arizona will be released in the Black Gap area.

The First Christian church presents J Richard Friedline of Enid Oklahoma in a color slide program on Europe and the Holy Land next Tuesday at 7 30 pm. Friedline and wife spent three months touring England France Germany Italy Switzerland Palestine Lebanon and Syria last summer. He will select and show his best pictures and no charge is made for the program open to the public.

The Post Office Dept extends 3 cent air mail from December 15 to 24 to speed first class mail. Trans Texas Airways moved over 75,000 pounds last season and expects this year’s volume to double. Postmaster B B West credits air delivery with reducing backlogs and helping Alpine area patrons mail early to ensure timely delivery.

New Big Bend Park Chief George W. Miller Named
George W. Miller, a 29 year National Park Service veteran from the Pacific Northwest, will become superintendent of Big Bend National Park arriving mid January. He succeeds Lon Garrison who heads a new conservation office. Miller aims to preserve the park’s natural state and develop facilities for visitors while continuing current programs. He was born January 16 1904 in Pueblo Colorado and is married to Mary Lucile Markham. they have a son George.

Alpine Bucks Take Fourth at Andrews Invitational
The Alpine Bucks went 2-2 in the Andrews Invitational basketball tournament, placing Jack Burgess on the all tournament team and finishing fourth among 16 West Texas high schools. Odessa won the title with Lamesa runner up as Andrews defeated Seagraves for third place. Burgess led Alpine with 18 points in the opener and 16 in the second round, while Odessa’s Hitt and Davis starred in the later rounds.

Ivey Ranch Hosts Annual Texas Barbecue Social
Traditional hospitality marked the Rex Ivey ranch barbecue held at Lajitas along the Rio Grande. About 500 guests from Alpine Presidio Marfa Fort Davis Odessa Marathon Sanderson Study Butte and Big Bend joined Rex Ivey, Brewster County Precinct 4 commissioner, for beef cabrito lamb frijole beans and more on a bluff overlooking the river. Children enjoyed horses and burros while adults mingled.

R. W. Smith Will Upheld By Court
The Eighth Court of Civil Appeals in El Paso affirmed the 83rd district court ruling on the contested will of R. W. Smith. The estate valued at over 50 000 was left to his wife two grandsons Harold and W C Smith of Odessa Buckner's Orphans Home of Dallas and a sister in law Mrs Tillie Love now deceased. Smith died in Alpine in October 1952 leaving land mineral interests to eight sections in Ector county and the Paisano Baptist encampment home to the Smith chapel congregation.

County Hospital Site Approved at City Park Alpine
The Texas State Health Department approved the city park site for Alpine County Hospital on the southeast playground corner two blocks west of Loop road, with plans drawn by Davis & Foster El Paso architects. Preliminary designs will go to the county commissioners for changes before final state approval. The 25 bed hospital is funded by $200,000 in bonds and federal matching grant.

Newell Buys Out Partner in Oil and Distribution Firms
W J Newell has bought out R F Schermerhorn of Dallas in the Newell Oil Co Sirocco Development Corp and the Newell Distributing Co. The pair had operated these concerns since January 1939 as Gulf Oil Corp sales distributors from Pecos River to Hudspeth County. Newell becomes sole owner and no changes in personnel or policy are planned.
