The 11th annual Big Bend 4 H and FFA livestock show will be held at Alpine on Saturday January 22, announced by county agent Frank N Newsom. Entries exceed 100 youths with about 15 baby beeves and 250 fat lambs, from Alpine Ft Davis Marathon Jeff Davis Brewster counties. Exhibits come from three FFA chapters and two 4 H clubs, with the Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse as the site, Vestal Askew of Armour and Co. to judge the lambs.

Alpine High School band under E. Joe Lee earned an 18 inch gold trophy for 3rd place at the Monahans Yule Bil celebration. Twelve bands competed through the town to the city park where bands received drinks and snacks. Pecos High won 1st, Wink High 2nd, Alpine 3rd.

Alpine Student James Wood Earns Eagle Scout Honor
James N. Wood, 15, a sophomore at Alpine High School, received the Eagle Award at the Yucca Council Boy Scouts of America annual meeting in El Paso. Only 14 other scouts in Yucca council earned the honor. Wood has 45 merit badges and has been a Scout for three years. He began with a troop sponsored by Highland Presbyterian in Odessa and now belongs to Troop 44 sponsored by the Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church in El Paso. His honors include the Emergency Service Explorer award earned last July. His Scoutmaster is John Heston. James is the son of Mr and Mrs R B Wood, with his father serving as minister of the Church of Christ.

Santa visits Alpine as 1000 bags of fruit and candy given
About 1500 people gathered at the Alpine county courthouse for Santa Claus annual visit. Santa handed out roughly 1000 bags of fruit and candy on the courthouse steps while CC Sponsors Event notes 300 bags remain for distribution. Downtown lights and Santa mark the official start of the Christmas shopping season in Alpine.

Newsom Named Head of Hereford Dept at San Antonio Show

The Alpine Rotary Club sponsored a Flapjack Flip pancake supper at Sul Ross cafeteria Tuesday night netting over 250 dollars. About 200 attended and many tickets sold to non attenders.
