Civil Case To Be Tried Next Week In Brewster County
Jurors are summoned for duty next Wednesday January 5 in 83rd District court to hear a civil case before Judge C E Patterson. GARRISONS HONORED AT FAREWELL PARTY
Lon Garrison superintendent of Big Bend National Park and Mrs Garrison were guests of honor at a farewell party at the Country Club. Alpine chamber of commerce park staff and their wives organized the gathering with 35 attendees. A plaque honored Garrison for promoting Big Bend and the proposed international park. He announced plans to relocate to Washington D C next month to head a new National Park Service protection and conservation office.

Fort Davis Museum draws 16000 visitors in seven months
More than 16,000 people signed guest registers at the Fort Davis Historical Society museum in seven months ending Dec 26. About 1,600 to 2,000 others visited without registering from 45 states plus DC Hawaii Alaska and seven foreign countries.

Three Drill Crew Members Die From Charcoal Fumes
Three members of a well drilling crew were asphyxiated by charcoal fumes at the W. C. Iking ranch 43 miles north of Fort Davis Texas. Doyle Smith 24 of San Antonio Clayton Murchison 58 and John Daniel Mason 40 a Negro died after bringing two buckets of coals into a trailer for heat. Justice of the Peace Barry Scobee ruled accidental asphyxiation after inspecting the scene and noting the men collapsed in the trailer.

John Connor Coleman of Alpine is named Knight of the York Cross of Honour the highest York Rite degree. Alpine residents enjoyed a mild Christmas with quiet activity and near zero incidents. Merchants surveyed by The Avalanche reported about five percent higher sales than last year while local post receipts fell slightly under four percent. A single arrest occurred when a intoxicated transient slept at a Northwest Alpine residence.
