Fort Stockton Pioneer highlights a typographical error in last week’s issue noting an ad offering portable typewriters at $1.25 plus tax. The irregular price contrast with listed regulars from six to 149 dollars marks a notable bargain misprint.
Two Alpine men have been appointed to district offices in Masonic organizations. Jeff Graham has been named district deputy grand master for the Bath District of the Grand Lodge of Texas. One Hendryx was appointed district deputy grand high priest of the Royal Arch Chapter of Texas.
The people of the Big Bend are invited to attend the opening of the Neill Museum in Fort Davis from 2 to 6 pm on Tuesday December. The museum contains dolls and other interesting connections and items. The Neill Fenne house was built in 1098 and showcases antiques.
Alpine Bucks win their first game at the Pecos Invitational 46 40 over McCamey after trailing at three quarters Wallace Peters leads Alpine with 24 points while Jim Adams nets 15 for McCamey Scott Winfield adds 18 for Alpine and Pecos defeats Alpine in the next round 70 58 Peters earns all tournament honors with 47 points in two games and Alpine prepares for a Big Lake Invitational opening clash Jan 5 6 7 versus Big Lake
The Uranga family from Alpine and El Paso earns recognition as Family Of The Month by a local firm. The couple married Aug 27 1948 and have four daughters Corine Darlene Loretta and Katrina.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce will mail ballots January 4 to members for eight director nominees: C. W. Davis Otis Coggins Jr Bill Winter Jol Newell Dick Tucker Jim Glasscock C B Boreing and Paul Forchheimer. Election judge F L McCollum and committee chair M C Kay expect four directors to be announced at the annual banquet January 24. Only 36 percent of members voted in the primary among 68 nominees.
Alpine schools close for the holidays after daybreak today and will resume on Tuesday January 3 1961. Cafeterias serve the last meal of 1960 today. Misses Mary and Flora Hill of Denver Colorado arrived Wednesday to visit their brother and sister in law Paul Hill during the holiday season.
Selso Almodova Ramirez died Tuesday night of a heart attack at his Alpine home. He worked for Brewster County as a heavy equipment operator for years and was born April 6, 1901 in Alpine. He is survived by his widow and several children. Livingston Funeral Home handles arrangements. Christine Young, home from Army training, visited Alpine High. She was valedictorian of Centennial School in 1956 and graduated Alpine High in May 1960. her parents Richard and living in Alpine.
Twenty eight landowners in the Trans-Pecas area took part in an anterless deer hunt with a total kill of 117 deer. Ice disrupted hunter effort and the final two days were hampered. Only about five percent of ranches joined the hunt, with figures by county showing permits issued, landowners participating, and acreage involved.
Mrs Jones long time Marathon resident dies at 116 after decades in the community. The funeral was held at Marathon Methodist Church with Rev Birdwell and Rev Eifor officiating. Burial followed in Marathon Cemetery. Survivors include Stewart Jones and Clarence T B Jones among others with 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The family moved to Marathon in 1906 and she was born in Coryell County Texas.
Vocal Council for Retarded Children raised 450 for Christmas gifts. It sent 125 to Austin State School serving 2350 children, 125 to Abilene State School with 2000, 125 to Mexia State School with 2200, and 75 to State School Farm Colony at Austin. 150 retained locally. George W. Seybert returns from Illinois with his 8 year old sister May Evans after 42 years. she will live with him.
Kenneth Moyer a sophomore at Low Morris College visited his parents Mr and Mrs Harold Moyer during a campus break.
Fifty one bulls sold at the Highland Hereford Breeders Association sale in Marfa last week for a total of 29369 dollars, averaging 576 per head. Grand champion halter bull from C. K. Smith of Marfa went to Hayes Mitchell and T. E. Smith of Marfa for 730. Reserve champion halter bull from Gay Howard and Son of Marfa sold to J. P. Espy of Fort Davis for 1000. Top ten bulls averaged 746 and 35 pen bulls averaged 498.5. Five commercial pen heifer calves averaged 132.5. Grand champion pen of three bulls and reserve champions each sold for 700. Grand champion pen of three bulls consigned by J. E. White Jr of Marfa, sold for 700 to Marion Flynt of Midland. Grand champion pen of heifers owned by Fletcher Mitchell Cattle Co. of Marfa sold for 127.5 to Joe T. Lane of Alpine.
Roy R. Largent and Sons of Fort Davis owned the reserve ensonun pest venmes sold for 140 to C. C. Pollard of Fort Stockton and Alpine. E White Jr of Marfa received the Supreme Breeder Award from West Texas Junctions Co. Marion Flynt of afidland led as principal bull buyer with 5700 dollars total. C Pollard of Fort Stockton led as principal heifer buyer taking 55 heifers and one bull.
The sale records show buyers including T. E. Smith Col Harry J Hubbard and W E Love Ranch along with Dan Ponder Hayes Mitchell El Rancho Glori etle Mims Ranch and others from Marfa Fort Davis Alpine Odessa Rankin Valentine Fort Worth and San Angelo purchasing bulls for totals around 576 per head and 31981 overall with multiple ranches listed.
Christmas services are announced for First Baptist Alpine St James Episcopal Marfa St Pauls Episcopal Alpine and Fort Davis First Methodist Alpine and other churches. Programs include morning services midnight candlelight and Christmas Eve worship with music andHoly communion.
The Alpine Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Christmas Eve service next Saturday December 24 at 11 o clock. A choir and soloist under Glenn F. Davis will provide special Christmas music with a meditation by Pastor Rev. C. W. Newbill. Public is invited. Miss Lucille Chaffin of Baston DC visits family, along with Opal Irby of Phoenix, and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Story of Otis Chalk Texas hosting relatives over the holidays.
U S Representative J T Rutherford plans a 1961 bill to designate Fort Davis as a federal national historic site and park. Advisory board deemed the fort established in 1854 worthy, with Seaton upholding the board’s decision, noting its value and tourism draw.
Marcelino Fierro Cano died early Tuesday at his home. Born February 20 1884 in Shafter he lived in Alpine for 50 years. Livingston Funeral Home handles arrangements.
Centennial School swept both kid basketball games in the afternoon at the school combination gym auditorium. The junior girls won 25 to 11 with Centennial’s Sylvia Cobos scoring 14 and Central’s Palmer Coats adding 10. The small girls defeated Central 24 to 11 as Melinda Burgess led Centennial with 14 points while Jan Evans scored 5 for Central.
