Alpine voters approve ending free water sewer and garbage service effective April 1 1961. Water outlets will be metered by then as council sets salaries and policy for city workers and mayor and councilmen. Gasoline procurement remains open to wholesalers for three months. Truck and sewer pipe purchases approved and a $25 monthly Christmas bonus for full time employees authorized.
Alpine district board approved paying 6093 to the State Board for a new 66 passenger bus with a 348 cubic inch Chevrolet motor. Delivery expected 30 to 60 days after December 10, 1960, with route reviews and bus overload concerns discussed.
The American Legion and Auxiliary announce their Christmas party at the Legion Home on Saturday December 17 with a social hour and dancing from 9 to 12. Cover charge is $1 per person. Holidays begin with early dismissal and school calendars note December 17 through January 3.
West near the Sunny Glen field the drill at 240 feet reached water bearing rock before weather halted work Tuesday. Mayor W E Lockhart notes the city will drill to 400 feet under Nixon Drilling Co contract but urges 500 feet. The city has 500 feet of 10 percent slotted casing ready for the run. Cost of the extra 100 feet and casing not disclosed.
The Mes siah performance at Sul Ross State College drew praise for the Christmas star atop the Main Building visible from Highways 118 and 9. Claud Austin built the star in 1958 using scrap angle iron and wires, a gift reflecting his appreciation for beauty. he later moved to Arlington, Texas, to work as Southwestern Bell divisional manager.
Snow and ice storm paralyses Big Bend area with downed electric and telephone lines. Alpine reports 1.58 inches of precipitation as a fresh norther adds snow on Mount Ord and Elephant Mountain. City crews cleared sidewalks while repair teams rush to restore power and telephones, with several outages affecting schools and traffic.
Brewster County Rescue Squad collected 210 in cash gifts over two weeks reported by Capt. Carl Williams Jr. Funds will buy grappling hooks and first aid gear. Alpine approved the squad as city Civil Defense rescue service and the county followed. Nine calls, four operations, four lost hunters all found, a drowning incident near Bedford. Williams promoted to major and Sam Schulze advanced to captain and secretary.
N E Scudder of Alpine expresses gratitude to Big Bend National Park rangers Brewster County Rescue Squad and many neighbors for locating him during a hunting trip on the Fulcher Ranch near Terrell Brewster County. He notes the community spirit and thanks the Alpine Sportsmen Club and others for their efforts and communication through severe weather and mud.
Alpine High girls travel to Brackettville for the Brackettville Sun basketball tournament. They meet Uvalde in the upper bracket at 6 pm Friday. Alpine aims to improve in the six team field while preparing for their 1960 season end with Christmas holidays.
The board of directors of the Federal Reserve in Dallas appointed Dr Rogers president of the National Bank in Alpine as a director of the El Paso Branch for a three year term beginning January. He succeeds John P Bubident of the First National Bank Midland who is retiring after service.
