The Brewster county OPA board will oversee six counties including Brewster Culberson Jeff Davis Pecos Presidio and Terrell under a regional consolidation plan effective after January. Fourteen boards will serve the San Antonio district, with the agency’s name changing to Price Control board as rationing narrows to tires and sugar only.
Lloyd P. Bloodworth, Alpine chamber of commerce manager, was elected vice-president of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Managers association at the Smuss convention in Fort Worth this week. It is believed he is the first officer living west of the Pecos River to receive such honor. While away, Bloodworth visited San Antonio and AUS in for important business matters for the local area.
The local Future Farmers of America chapter captured major Area 2 prizes for top production records in sheep poultry and vegetable categories and took second in beef. They received a $29.10 prize as part of the annual awards.
Eleven head of registered Hereford cattle were shipped from the TO ranch in northern Messer to Brewster County. Kemal bought six yearling heifers and one bull at 750 and 800 dollars respectively, Kokernot purchased three bull calves and one heifer at 800 dollars each. Kimball and Kokernot, joined by county agent Frank Newcomb, spent two days inspecting the herd, which has performed well at fat stock shows and includes 200 retired and 2500 commercial cows with high price potential when offered for sale.
City schools will close this afternoon for the Christmas holidays and reopen Thursday, January. Sul Ross College dismissed for the holidays yesterday and will reopen Friday, January 4.
American Legion hosts a dance at the old USO building tomorrow honoring recently returned veterans. Ray McNeill and his orchestra will provide the music.
Police reported Tuesday night a burglary at The King grocery on West Main. Several pounds of bacon and cigarettes were taken after an entry via a side window. Suspect details not released.
The chapter runs enhanced production projects this year and aims for strong contest results as awards are offered later. Awards depend on participation, project size in each division, and observed results. The FFA Reporter is defined negatively as a chiseler who flatters, covers faults, and seeks praise while needing help himself.
Effective January 1 the Sanderson Wool Commission Co. will be renamed Big Bend Wool and Mohair Co. There is no change in ownership or management. John T. Williams of Sanderson remains general manager and Press Nichols remains manager. The firm opened last May and has handled over two million pounds of wool and mohair.
Aviation student Pfe Charles F Brown son of Mrs C F Brown Alpine was discharged at Randolph Field after 34 months in the RAF. Lt John H Hurlburt discharged Dec 10 returned on indefinite stay. Major and Mrs Daugherty arrived en route to the West Coast from England Italy North Africa where he served 21 months with Allied Military Government. Harold E Moyer steward in Merchant Marine visited home, since July two Atlantic trips to Italy and France. Set Ray Morrow on 21 day furlough visiting family, hopes for discharge next month. Cpl W D Cleveland son of C D Cleveland landed at Boston Dec 10 from ETO, overseas over two years. Cpl Vernon McCally discharged Dec 11 at San Diego returning home. Cpl J C Lewis discharged from Marines, registering for work at Sul Ross College in Alpine. Billie Weston writes he saw SS Big Bend at Saipan where stationed. Nick J Thee SIC returned to Atlantic City after three weeks furlough.
Music fans hear daily organ and amplified church bell system at Pine Methodist Church. System installed by Ray Newsom, Kenneth Schloemer, and Chas Lilliard per Rev. Marvin Williams. Morning organ by Mrs. Marvin Williams, evenings by Mrs. Paul Vogt and Mrs. C. G. Morrison, through Christmas week. Also notes local servicemen returning from Europe, including Pinky Young, Pfc. William H. Sloan, and Capt. George Asa Jones, all residents of Pine.
John Quincy Daugherty, age 80, died Wednesday last of influenza. Funeral held at Livingston Funeral Home Chapel last Sunday. Daugherty, a pioneer who built Alpine’s first ice plant in 1901 and later a light plant, returned to Alpine in 1937 after working in Olney Electra Martin and San Antonio. Survived by brother T P Daugherty of Newkirk and numerous nephews and nieces. Interment Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Raymond Garnett Henry Murray E E Daugherty Alpine and W V Priest Manteca Cal grand-nephews.
Frank Williams state fire chief explained fire fighting methods and modern equipment to Alpine Volunteers at city hall last week. J C Cooley fire chief urges more qualified men to join the department and bring in younger blood to relieve current shortages.
The Rio Grande Wolf club, about seven ranch men in southeast Brewster County, launched the second coyote chemical gun trial this week. Darwin Ivey, district wildlife supervisor, placed a trapper in Asa Jones country to help set out "getters" across the open fat country while Frank Newsom, county agent, praised the program’s effectiveness. The first chemical run near Nine Point mountain yielded 89 coyotes in two and a half months.
Alpine area children are invited to a free Granada Theatre party Monday at 10 am. C W Davis says Santa Claus will attend in person with a gift for each child. A free show of comedies and cartoons will be shown for all attendees.
The Big Bend area plans a permanent year round Boy Scout camp. Delegation led by W C Mounts and C G Matthews seeks a site and funding in Fort Davis Alpine and Marfa with District Chairman Don Littleton and camping committee crafting plans for a first annual Big Bend Scout conference in January. Camp size and cost await final determination.
Bids will be received January 29 by the State Highway Department for drainage, grading and paving of Highway No. 67 over a 23 mile gap in western Pecos County. Plans approved include right‑of‑way easements, and supervision delays are easing. The project marks ten years of county and highway officials’ effort, delayed by the war, to build a new route paralleling the Santa Fe tracks from Fort Stockton westward to the crossing.
