Our column notes a surge in MP readers after letters from Major and Mrs. Richard J. White of Alpine and Sam Gould in Florida join the list. The piece recalls past local lore, adds Mrs. Bibb and Mr. Bibb as new subscribers, and mentions Tom Lankford recalling Alpine water sales in the oil era.
The Big Bend Bowl between Class AA and Class A and B teams, scheduled for Jan 1 at Sul Ross, was cancelled after Rodney Kidd rescinded his approval. The Louisiana league recalled its ruling, stating players would lose eligibility and players would bear game costs. Local boosters say other schools applying after Alpine exposure prompted the reversal.
The government weather bureau station at Sul Ross recorded daily maximum and minimum temperatures over the past week. December 6 61 and 42, December 7 62 and 31, December 8 65 and 46, December 9 68 and 47, December 10 64 and 23, December 11 50 and 24, December 12 62 and 43, December 13 62 and 40.
Steve u Stimberg Sr, Brewster county ranchman, was elected president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association at the annual meeting in San Antonio. He succeeds Ray Winnloughby of San Angelo. Gilmer Morris of Alpine was named a director and Mrs Worth Evans of Fort Davis became president of the Woman's Auxiliary. San Angelo selected as permanent headquarters.
Construction accelerates on three business blocks and a tourist court along Main Avenue route 90 and 67 in Alpine. George Lines and H G Mardis build a 40 by 80 foot stucco structure west of the bridge with Alpine Plumbing Co. leasing one unit. the old Battle house is being remodeled into apartments. C F Pop Barger adds a 28 by 54 foot frame store east of Linne. H Van Fossan plans auto sales at a 36 by 72 foot site west of Mrs Van Fossan’s East Main office. Mrs Ella R McBride’s new modern tourist courts on East Main near completion.
Alden Ladford U S Navy was brought to the hospital Monday morning after falling from an eastbound passenger train near Altuda station 15 miles east of Alpine. He suffered several bruises, not serious, and said he fell asleep while walking. He had just docked at San Pedro California on the battleship Ohio and was heading home to North Carolina on furlough. Lt James M Paris was discharged from the air force in Denver last week and Mrs Paris and baby, who were with him, returned to Alpine.

Fort Davis native Myrl McBride, on 90 day furlough, tells of surrender at Bataan in 1942, three years as a Japanese POW, brutal camp life, a Death March, and escape attempts. He recounts wounds, a hospital corpsman aid, and aid from a hacienda family before returning to Camp O Donnell.
Brewster county bond sales to yesterday reached 86 percent of a $60,000 quota. Purchasers this month may apply on this quote, and Mr. Baines believes the goal will be reached. Overall sales to yesterday totaled $137,000 against a $160,000 target.
A Securities and Exchange Commission hearing is scheduled tomorrow on Central Power and Light's proposal to sell its electric and gas properties in the Big Bend area of Texas to its parent West Texas Utilities for a base price of $815,000. The SEC set the date on November 28.
An Alpine organization meeting of the newly formed Pilot club elected officers including President Mrs. Theyn Penn and vice presidents Miss Elva Mills and Mrs. Nell Griffin. The club plans civic welfare work and reports 42 charter members under Houston club sponsorship.
J Pullier of Marta, Miler of Fort Davis and C F Cox of Xipine attended a federal Land Bank meeting in San Angelo last Thursday. W J Chenault explained farm benefits under the AAA program for 1948. Sterling Evans, resident of the Federal Land Bank in Houston, announced loan progress and a four percent interest rate for the coming year. The bank has paid cash dividends totaling 150 percent since its founding 38 years ago, with forty percent paid in the last two years.
Towns along Highway 90 between Van Horn and San Antonio will send representatives to a January meeting in Del Rio to discuss attracting tourists via the Border Route. The previous association dissolved during the war. now leaders aim to revive efforts as tourism becomes a major industry. J. L. McCollum emphasizes turning visitors into commerce and has tasked Mr. Bloodworth with full cooperation as plans unfold.
Downtown crowds welcome Old Santa in a Casparis plane landing at Stans Municipal Airport. State Police and Texas State Guard escort him through a parade from Ave A to Main Street. The Alpine Chamber of Commerce and merchants sponsor the event with bands, carols, and festive lights drawing visitors from Van Horn and beyond.
A telegram from Miss Irma Lee Batey reports Rev J Batey head of Sul Ross Music department died in Nashville Tennessee Tuesday morning. He had served as pastor of the Church of Christ here until illness forced his retirement and departure to his former home. Miss Batey has been on leave to care for him for several months.
Lloyd P. Bloodworth, manager of the Alpine Chamber of Commerce, left yesterday for Fort Worth to attend the annual convention of the Chamber of Commerce Managers Assn. of Texas and to handle other important matters while away.
Alpine High School will stage a one act dramatization of Dickens A Christmas Carol in the auditorium Thursday December 20 at 8 pm Admission 30 cents for adults and 10 cents for students. The cast comes from the newly formed dramatic club directed by Leonard Ford with plans to expand membership after Christmas and stage more plays throughout winter.
