Service members' discharge notices sweep through Alpine area

The community notes several military discharges and postings. Pfe. Merced C. Cordova received discharge at Fort Douglas Utah on December 10 after 20 months in the Air Force. Pvt. Ernesto H. Fierro discharged from Fort Lewis Washington. Sgt. Hubert O. Clark, grandson of local residents, arrived at Fort Sam Houston for discharge November 15 after nearly three years overseas. T-Sgt. Jim Stovell discharged December 7 after four years in the Air Force. He visits Alpine Marfa and Sanderson, with brother Capt. Tom Stovell in a San Antonio army hospital. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Adams arrive for holidays after his Navy discharge at Norfolk December 12. they will travel to Long Beach for employment. Cpl. Forrest Hope, former Alpine density collector, discharged from the Army at Montgomery Alabama and plans to return to Alpine area. Lt. and Mrs. Grady Nelon and baby visiting. Nelon stationed at Goodfellow Field San Angelo. Lt. Billy Fielder, Marine Air Corps, on 30 day leave after serving at Guam and now on West Coast. Tomas A. Christmas Day Observed Quietly in Alpine

Christmas day passed quietly in Alpine with most business houses closed all day. Special Yule services were held in city churches during the week prior. The weather office reported an almost ideal day with mild temperatures and a moderate west wind common to the area.

Hiway 90 Meet To Be Held Jan. Sth

A meeting of representatives from towns along Highway 90 between Van Horn and San Antonio is set for Del Rio on January 8 to promote advertising Highway 90 as the best route between San Antonio and El Paso. Beard Sells Presidio Oil Business To Son

Z. A. Beard, a Standard Oil distributor in the Big Bend, announced the sale of his Presidio County and Valentine gas business to his son J. N. Norman Beard, recently discharged from the Army Air Forces, who has taken charge. Beard will keep operating in Brewster County and Fort Davis. the Beard family will move to Mar to wn.

Across Nation in Minutes 432 mph Atomic Era Photo Flight

A post war bomber crossed the nation in 17 minutes and 34 seconds at 432 mph, a record for the atomic age. Lt. Col. H. E. Warden led the flight from Long Beach California with Capt. Glen W. Edwards and others aboard, photographed in Washington DC with Reuben C. Hood and Chester Goen. The plane, designed by Goen, wrecked days later on a test flight.

Alpine Woman Killed in Auto Crash

Alpine woman Sarah Sadie Lines aged 80 died when a car she rode in swerved on U S Highway 90 near Castle Canyon eight miles north of Del Rio. The vehicle struck a bridge, ejecting Mrs Lines. her husband George Lines survived. funeral service held at West Alpine Christian church. Interment Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are husband and son Guss in Navy.

Pioneer Cowman Claimed By Death

John W. Harmon 77 longtime Alpine resident and early 1900s trail rider died at home after an extended illness. Born November 9, 1868 in Delta County Texas, he married Amanda Elizabeth Irby in 1889 and moved to Alpine in 1890 to join brother Sam Harmon. He worked as a bookkeeper for C H Larkin Co and later on Jackson and Harmon cattle firm. Funeral at Livingston Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Fred Rogers, interment Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by widow six children fifteen grandchildren eight great grandchildren and a brother Sam Harmon of Alpine.
