Government Week Speakers Announced for Alpine High School
Alpine High School announces the Government Week lineup coordinated by Mrs. Henry Bailey. Jay Stanley of Lubbock will speak at 10 15 a m Monday with events through Saturday featuring municipal officials judges lawyers and youth leaders. Candidates will campaign Monday afternoon to Tuesday 3 30 and participate in a mock jury trial on Saturday.

The Alpine Public Schools holiday period was extended through Thursday January 2 1964 with classes resuming Friday January 3 1964. Superintendent Jack Frost recommended the action at Tuesday’s board meeting. The board also approved Frost attending the Austin administrator’s meeting January 5-10, and authorized a thank you note to Mrs. Dorothy Perryman and homemaking girls for the December 10 Christmas dinner. It also approved 4th and 5th grades dismissing at 3:15 p.m. Wednesdays in the second semester to allow teachers to attend modern math classes at Sul Ross State College.

Deer Season Best In History, Club Says
The Big Bend Sportsman's Club reported record deer season in the Trans Pecos nine day hunt with the highest hunter success and the heaviest deer. Bob Sims Alpine weighed 220 pounds field dressed. Ike Roberts Marathon had the most points per Boone and Crockett rules and won a 243 model 70 Winchester rifle. Daily winners included Jack Bell El Paso J W Golla Alleyton Luis Salcido Fort Davis Larry Abbot Abilene Bill Barnsley Bridgeport Troy Swanson Alice Bob Sims Alpine Jimmy Greenwood Houston Joe Lane Alpine. Gold Star 4-H Winners Bill Stovell and Judy Owens
Bill Stovell 17 of Alpine and Judy Owens 16 of Marathon are the Brewster-Jeff Davis 4-H Club Gold Star winners for 1963. They will be honored at the District 6 Gold Star banquet in Fort Stockton on December 14. Stovell led livestock judging team efforts in 1961 1962 and 1963 and serves as Brewster-Jeff Davis 4-H Club president. Owens has five years in 4-H, helped lead district judging teams to state, and is Marathon 4-H Club treasurer and a prominent promoter. she shows lambs and excels in 4-H and school activities.

Alpine Eyes Push to Open Mental Retarded School
Civic leaders from Alpine including County Judge Felix McGaughy Mayor Bib Winter and Chamber President Charles Boreing met to plan pursuing a state enabling act to establish a mental retardation school west of the 100th meridian. 4 H Banquet Set Monday Honoring Brewster Jeff Davis Members
The annual Hoewster-Jeff Davis 4 H achievement award program will be held at the Spine Community Center at 3 30 p m Monday Dec 16 with Sen Dorsey Hardeman of San Angelo as speaker. Sixty 4 H club members from Brewster and Jeff Davis Counties will be honored. 4 H President Bill Stowell Alpine will be master of ceremonies.
